Close-up of emergency sign outside Orlando Regional Medical Center, pull out to wide shot of the hospital as ambulance pulls away STORYLINE: A gunman opened fire on Friday in the offices of an engineering firm from which he was sacked more than two years ago, killing one person and injuring five others. Jason Rodriguez, 40, surrendered to police about three hours later, after officers saw him through the window of his mother's home and asked him to come outside, Orlando Police Chief Val Demings said. Demings called the shooting "a tragedy" and said there were still "a lot of details" to clarify. The Florida shooting comes a day after a gunman at the Fort Hood military base in Texas killed 13 people and wounded about 30. An Army psychiatrist is suspected of opening fire on fellow soldiers there. Demings said investigators did not know why Rodriguez targeted the engineering firm where he once worked. Camille Previlon told The Associated Press her uncle, engineer Guy Lungenbel, was shot in the back and was able to talk but had not said much about the shooting. People streamed out of the 16-story Legion Place office building around lunchtime and some told local television stations they had barricaded themselves inside their offices while the gunman was on the loose. A main highway was closed in both directions through downtown Orlando and nearby schools were locked down until the gunman was caught. Rows of ambulances lined up outside the building as police snipers took up positions around the building and officers on foot and horseback searched the area.

Police lights STORYLINE: A gunman opened fire on Friday in the offices of an engineering firm where he was sacked more than two years ago, killing one person and injuring five others. Jason Rodriguez, 40, who surrendered to police about three hours after the shooting, told reporters he had been 'left to rot'. He said he was 'angry', as police led him away in handcuffs. He was arrested after officers saw him through the window of his mother's home and asked him to come outside, according to Val Demings, Orlando Police Chief. Later reports emerged that he was so deep in debt that he did not have the money to visit his son 30 minutes away and had told a bankruptcy judge that he had debts totalling three times his annual salary. As officers led a handcuffed Jason Rodriguez into a police station, a reporter asked the divorced 40-year-old why he had attacked his former colleagues. "Because they left me to rot," said Rodriguez, without saying who. The shooting on the eighth floor of an office tower paralyzed downtown Orlando for three hours. All of the victims worked at the firm of Reynolds, Smith and Hills, where Rodriguez was an entry-level engineer for 11 months before he was 'let go' in June 2007, the company said. Supervisors said his performance was not up to standard and when he did not improve, he was fired. Police said Rodriguez used a handgun in the shooting, but they did not release additional details, including how he got inside the building, whether he said anything to people in the office or how he initially escaped. The five wounded people were in stable condition at Orlando hospitals. Rodriguez' bankruptcy filing - and his former mother-in-law - suggested he was plagued by money worries. His mother-in-law, America Holloway, told The Associated Press that Rodriguez and her daughter, Neshby, were married for about 6 years before divorcing several years ago. Holloway said the couple lived with her in Orlando for several years while they were married and that Rodriguez abused her daughter and once threw all her clothes into the street. Camille Previlon told AP Television her uncle, engineer Guy Lungenbel, was shot in the back and was able to talk but had not said much about the shooting. "He's just in a lot of pain," she said. After the lunchtime shooting, some people streamed out of the Legion Place building while others holed up in their offices. A major highway was closed, and nearby schools were locked down. Rows of ambulances lined up outside the building as police snipers took up positions around the building and officers searched the area, on foot and horseback. The Florida shooting came a day after a gunman at the Fort Hood military base in Texas killed 13 people and wounded about 30.

NASA TV Kennedy Space Centre, Florida - 14 November, 2006 12. Pan view of pilots in simulated shuttle cockpit 13. Close-up of pilot William Oefelein 14. STILL of Oefelein as navy pilot STORYLINE: An astronaut drove 900 miles (1,500 kilometres) and donned a wig and trench coat to confront a woman she believed was her rival for the affections of a space shuttle pilot, police said. She was arrested on Monday and charged with attempted kidnapping and other counts. 43-year old US Navy Captain Lisa Nowak, who flew last July on a shuttle mission to the international space station, was also charged with attempted vehicle burglary with battery, destruction of evidence and battery. She was denied bail. Police said Nowak drove from her home in Houston to the Orlando International Airport, wearing nappies so she would not have to stop to urinate, to confront Colleen Shipman. Nowak believed Shipman was romantically involved with Navy Commander William Oefelein, a pilot during the Space Shuttle Discovery's trip to the space station last December, police said. Nowak told police that her relationship with Oefelein was "more than a working relationship but less than a romantic relationship," according to an arrest affidavit. Police officers recovered a love letter to Oefelein in her car. A NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) spokesperson in Houston, Texas, said that, as of Monday, Nowak's status with the astronaut corps remained unchanged. The spokesperson said he could not recall the last time an astronaut was arrested and said there were no rules against fraternising among astronauts. When she found out that Shipman was flying to Orlando from Houston, Nowak decided to confront her, according to the arrest affidavit. Nowak raced from Houston to Orlando wearing nappies so she would not have to stop to urinate, authorities said. Astronauts routinely wear them during a shuttle launch and re-entry. Dressed in a disguise, Nowak boarded an airport bus that Shipman took to her car in an airport car park. Shipman told police she noticed someone following her, hurried inside the car and locked the doors, according to the arrest affidavit. Nowak rapped on the window, tried to open the car door and asked for a ride. Shipman refused but rolled down the car window a few inches when Nowak started crying. Nowak then sprayed a chemical into Shipman's car, the affidavit said. Shipman drove to the parking lot booth, and the police were called. During a check of the parking lot, an officer followed Nowak and watched her throw away a bag containing a wig and air rifle. They also found a steel mallet, a four-inch (10-centimetre) folding knife, rubber tubing, and garbage bags inside a bag Nowak was carrying when she was arrested, authorities said. Inside Nowak's vehicle, which was parked at a nearby motel, authorities uncovered a pepper spray package, an unused BB-gun cartridge, latex gloves and e-mails between Shipman and Oefelein. They also found a letter "that indicated how much Mrs. Nowak loved Mr. Oefelein," an opened package for a buck knife, Shipman's home address and hand written directions to the address, the arrest affidavit said. If convicted of attempted kidnapping, Nowak could face a maximum of life in prison.
