The Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) confirmed that Perth's eastern hills suburbs of Parkerville and Stoneville each lost two homes. Another home was destroyed in the nearby suburb of Lake Farm Retreat. One local resident said that she was out when the fires broke out and stopped when she tried to return home. "I tried to get home and a policeman just said no one is allowed up there. Hopefully my neighbour has got my children, my dog and my budgie," she told the Australian Broadcast Corporation. Fires have also destroyed a number of other buildings, burnt out more than 10 cars and killed up to 100 sheep and other animals, including kangaroos. Nearly two hundred firefighters, worked into the night to fight the fires, which covered over 700 hectares. Early on Friday, FESA officials said the fire which destroyed the four homes in Parkerville and Stoneville had been contained. Meanwhile, a severe weather warning has been issued for much of the New South Wales state north coast, as the town of Lismore remains on flood alert. The Bureau of Meteorology is warning New South Wales residents in the northern rivers area and in the mid-north coast of heavy rain, damaging winds and surf, and flash flooding. Australian television footage showed residents of Lismore already struggling with flood waters. One man used his hands to bail water out of his vehicle, while another braved the deep waters to take his dog for a walk. An average of 200mm (7.8 inches) of rain has fallen in the area in the past 24 hours with minor to moderate flooding predicted for Lismore predicted over the next 24-hours. A State Emergency Service (SES) spokesman said about 30 people had been evacuated from a low-lying caravan park in Lismore, and another two parks in the area were on evacuation alert. People were rescued from flooded vehicles in three separate incidents at Mullumbimby, and one car was swept away in flood waters.

Wide of man walking his dog through flooded field 24. Flooded street with road sign reading (in English): "Local traffic only" STORYLINE A frothy sea foam covered beaches along the coast in New South Wales, on Friday, just one day after bushfires ravaged suburbs in the Perth hills in the country's west, destroying at least five homes and forcing the evacuation of residents, while rain and floodwaters caused havoc on the east coast. The sea foam phenomenon swallowed up a local beach near Tweedheads in New South Wales, where teenagers decided to go swimming and surfing in foamy ocean. The foam is created by impurities in the ocean churned up together by powerful currents which cause the water to form bubbles. On Thursday, the Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) confirmed that Perth's eastern hills suburbs of Parkerville and Stoneville each lost two homes. Another home was destroyed in the nearby suburb of Lake Farm Retreat. One local resident said that she was out when the fires broke out and stopped when she tried to return home. Pan of fire burning close to residential properties STORYLINE A major bushfire that was threatening lives and homes near Perth airport has been contained after firefighters worked through the night to contain the blaze. The bushfire ripped through about 65 hectares (650-thousand square metres) in the suburb of Cloverdale, prompting the evacuation of residents of two roads on Wednesday afternoon. "We have seen flames and a lot of black smoke coming from just up the road here so I just want to pack up my family and get out," local Carlos Winikerei told Australian Broadcaster AuBC. Residents returned home in the evening, Fire and Emergency Services Authority (FESA) said. A male firefighter suffered minor burns and was taken to Royal Perth Hospital in a stable condition, a spokesman from the FESA said. Although the blaze was no longer out of control, it continued to smoulder on the eastern side on Thursday (Wednesday GMT) and residents were warned to remain alert to changing weather conditions. The fire on the western side has been completely extinguished, FESA said. A bushfire advice warning has been issued for people in the eastern part of Cloverdale near the airport. Fifty career and volunteer Fire and Rescue Service and Bush Fire Service firefighters in 17 appliances spent the night mopping up the area, assisted by airport firefighters and federal police. The cause of the fire is unknown. Perth Airport said there were some delays to arrivals and departures, and passengers were told to allow extra time for their journey to and from the airport due to smoke and road closures. Meanwhile, a bushfire burning on an island off southeast Queensland has scorched about 160 hectares (1.6 square kilometres) and is proving difficult to contain, Australian emergency services said on Thursday. The fire broke out north of Cowan, on the popular tourist destination Moreton Island, on Wednesday. Some holiday makers were evacuated and other campsites have been put on notice in case the fire spreads further, Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service said. The town is not under threat. After overnight attempts to corner the fire with backburning were unsuccessful, additional emergency crews on Thursday travelled to the island to help battle the blaze, the services' spokesman said. Elsewhere, in New Zealand, a fire prompted the evacuation of dozens of homes early on Thursday, local television reported. Amateur footage obtained by TVNZ showed flames coming within metres of a residential property in a suburb of Wanaka. According to local reports, residents defended their properties with garden houses and the fire burnt for ore than tree hours before firefighters got it under control, New Zealand media reported. In the end, no properties were damaged. The fire started about 4 am local time (1500GMT) and burnt approximately 600 square metres of scrub. The cause of it was unknown. A: The information that we have is linked to al-Qaida and its subsidiaries and we can't go into the details of that. But suffice to say that the information is credible, it's generalised, not specific as to targets and timing, but sufficient for us to take the people of Australia into our confidence and advise them of this." Q: Does it involve more ASIO (Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation) raids? A: In relation to the ASIO raids, can I say that that relates to other matters, that does not relate to this information that we received. This information we received relates to general alerts we received from the United States and the United Kingdom and we do believe that it has links to al-Qaida and possibly other bodies associated with that terrorist group." File - Recent 17. Various of houses raided by the Australian Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) during investigations of October's Bali bombing STORYLINE: A British-born Muslim man arrested on Monday appeared in court amid tight security on Tuesday on charges of plotting to blow up Israeli diplomatic missions in Australia. At the brief hearing in Perth Magistrates' Court in Western Australia state, lawyers for John Roche, a 49-year-old Australian citizen who converted to Islam ten years ago, said his client would plead not guilty to two charges of conspiracy to bomb diplomatic premises. The charges relate to alleged plans to bomb the Israeli Embassy in Canberra and the Israeli consulate in Sydney. Roche was not required to enter a plea on Tuesday and was ordered to be held until 27 November when he will make an application for bail. Prosecutor Martyn Plummer said Roche was charged with conspiring to damage - by fire or explosives - diplomatic property in Australia, and to harm diplomatic personnel, while in Malaysia, Pakistan and Afghanistan between February 15 and May 26, 2000. He faces a maximum sentence of 45 years imprisonment if convicted. In recent media interviews, Roche has claimed he trained with Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terrorist network in Afghanistan. His arrest followed a wave of raids across the country by heavily armed police and intelligence officers investigating bombings that killed nearly 200 people, many of them Australians, on the Indonesian island of Bali on 12 October. Police said, however, that the alleged bomb plot involving Roche was not linked to that terror attack. The raids targeted suspected sympathisers of Jemaah Islamiyah, a Southeast Asia-based Islamic group suspected of involvement in the Bali bombings. Earlier this month, Roche told the Australian press that he had met Jemaah Islamiyah's alleged spiritual leader, Abu Bakar Bashir, in the mid-1990s during one of Bashir's visits to Australia. Roche was one of many members of Perth's Muslim community who spoke to journalists after the raids.
