Sacramento Sniper Attack (04/10/1998)
In Sacramento today, two armed gunman wearing body armor shot at police officers and then rammed their van into a patrol car. The suspect driver of the van told officers pulling him out of the burning wreckage that a pipe bomb and amunition were inside. A square mile area evacuted as a precaution. The officer who was shot was wearing a bulletproof vest and suffered only a graze to the shoulder. The deputy in the crash was hospitalized with possible broken ribs. Police don't have a motive yet for the attack but say it looked to have been an ambush of one of the officers. A second suspect was believed to be in the van during the shooting, but authorities don't know what happened to him. He may still be in the charred van or might have fled. END

Mid of Sikh men at news conference 12. Pan of Sikh Cultural Society building STORYLINE: New York City's mayor spoke out against US gun laws at the Sikh Cultural Society in Queens, New York in the wake of Sunday's mass shooting in Wisconsin. "Just two weeks after the tragedy in Aurora we've seen another mass shooting, one in which it appears there were some warning signs about the shooter, and still the two presidential candidates have not given the American public a plan to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. Six worshippers at a Sikh temple in suburban Milwaukee temple were killed in the attack along with the gunman. Gurdev Singh Kang, the President of Sikh Culture Society said he thought it was a hate crime. "they (are) targeting our identity," he said. Authorities have identified the gunman as Wade Michael Page, a 40-year-old Army veteran described by civil rights groups as a neo-Nazi and white supremacist. Police have called the attack Sunday an act of domestic terrorism. For Sikhs, the attack was the latest in a string of horrific assaults on their community. Many of the recent attacks have been outright hate crimes. Others remain unsolved. Just four days after the September 11 2001 attacks, Balbir Singh Sodhi, a gas station owner in Mesa, Arizona., was shot and killed by a man who mistook him for a Muslim and was seeking revenge. Last year, a New York City subway worker and Sikh, 30-year-old Jiwan Singh, was assaulted on a train and accused of being related to Osama bin Laden. His son had been attacked two years earlier. In Elk Grove, California, a Sacramento suburb, two Sikh men were fatally shot last year during an afternoon walk. No one has been charged with the crimes. Sikhs leave their hair uncut and covered by a turban as outward demonstrations of and reminders of their faith. Officials and witnesses said Sunday's gunman walked into the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin and opened fire as several dozen people prepared for Sunday morning services. Six were killed, and three were critically wounded. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives said the gunman used a legally purchased 9mm handgun and multiple magazines of ammunition. Or as the case my be on cells that may already exist here, people who''ve overextended their visas or may in fact have become naturalised. But I think the issue is that there are US citizens who may be interested in this kind of a thing." Los Angeles, California - 19 August 2005. 18. People inside mosque. STORYLINE: Islamic leaders in Los Angeles expressed concern over reports that a militant Islamic prison-based gang may have been behind a terrorist plot to attack targets in the Los Angeles area on September 11 or Jewish holidays. The alleged plot, bought to light after the arrest of two robbery suspects in July in a suburb east of Los Angeles, is the focus of an ongoing probe by federal investigators, counter-terrorism experts, and local law enforcement officials. Police searching the apartment of one of the suspects found literature praising Jihad and evidence of a target list which included National Guard recruiting stations, synagogues and the Israeli Consulate in Los Angeles. One of the suspects was a recent parolee of a state prison in Northern California. Officials claim that the prison, near the state capital Sacramento, is home to a radical Islamic gang. Another suspect in custody and linked to the terror probe is a Pakistani national living in Los Angeles, though it is unclear how he was linked to the other suspects, who are US citizens. Sources close to the probe say the three suspects were regulars at a local mosque in the city of Inglewood, south of downtown Los Angeles. The mosque, serves a mostly South Asian membership, including workers at the nearby Los Angeles International Airport. Imam Junaid Kharsany, clerical leader of the mosque, said he and other worshipers were surprised and shocked by news that the three young men were the focus of a terror probe. Recalling the young Pakistani man as friendly, helpful and a community-family-oriented person, he said "the challenge for us as Imams is to preach a traditional Islam, especially to these younger minds, and hope that they will not be waylaid and will not be ambushed by these preachers of hate that are operating so freely in the entire world." Local Muslim leaders in Los Angeles said they were not aware of the Islamic prison gang that officials say is active at the Sacramento prison. But they also condemned the extremist, hate-based message of such a prison-based group or other groups claiming to be followers of Islam. Federal officials claimed that inmates in state prison systems are particularly susceptible to radical Islamist ideology. Prison officials across the nation say they so far have seen more potential for recruitment than real threats, but say they''ve been monitoring Muslim groups since the 2001 terrorist attacks. Terrorism analyst Terry O''Sullivan said while there''s been an emphasis on stopping Al-Qaida operatives from entering the US, more attention was needed on the potential influence of radical Islamic ideologies on American natives with prisons being an obvious point of concern.

Authorities in Butte County closed all roads to Paradise, a town of about 30-thousand residents some 90 miles north of Sacramento, and ordered nine-thousand residents to leave their homes. An evacuation shelter was set up in nearby Chico. A woman, whose identity was not immediately released, suffered a heart attack during the evacuation and died, said Ruben Grijalva, director of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. It's the only fatality associated with Northern California fires this month. The fire, which started on Wednesday, had grown to more than 20-thousand acres and threatened 4,600 structures, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Twenty homes were confirmed to be destroyed, but officials said that number likely could double once crews were able to better assess the damage. More than 1,500 firefighters were trying to contain the blaze, which was only 16 percent contained by Friday morning. Fed by strong, erratic winds on Thursday, the fire spread to the hills of the Butte College campus, where officials had set up an incident command centre, said Cal Fire spokesman Joshpae White. Firefighters, however, needed to move quickly. Winds from the southwest were expected to pick up in the afternoon, which could push the flames closer to Paradise, said White, who was one of the firefighters injured a day earlier. In recent days, hot temperatures, steady winds and tinder-dry vegetation have fuelled a series of destructive blazes from Butte County to the San Francisco Bay area to the Los Padres National Forest. But 900 firefighters in Santa Cruz County caught a break Friday as cooler temperatures and increased cloud cover helped them battled a wildfire that had destroyed at least 10 homes in the Bonny Doon community, according to Cal Fire. It was 25 percent contained on Friday morning and had scorched 600 acres. More than 1,500 residents have been told to evacuate their homes in the heavily forested hills about 10 miles northwest of Santa Cruz since the fire broke out Wednesday afternoon. California State Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency in Santa Cruz County early on Thursday to free up additional firefighting resources. He declared one in Butte County late on Wednesday.
