Iraq Statement - Fallujah fighters say they will punish "collaborators"
NAME: IRQ STATEMENT 280604Nx TAPE: EF04/0659 IN_TIME: 10:55:38:15 DURATION: 00:02:22:18 SOURCES: Amateur Video DATELINE: Fallujah - Recent RESTRICTIONS: SHOTLIST 1. Wide shot of group reading statement with UPSOUND (Arabic): "Recently we realised that some of our Sheikh brothers who are steered by the occupation forces and its intelligence services are criticising our brothers in Fallujah in the media and we would like to clarify the following: First, we admire our brother Shiites and we told them we are partners in this homeland and we and them have the same rights and duties. And we would like to tell them that Fallujah city is the safe haven for all religions. And we would like to ask them to stop the allegations of what the enemies of Iraq and the Americans and the Jews and their allies say: that Fallujah is the terrorist city. Fallujah is the city of sacrifice for God. Fallujah is the city which is going to lead the liberation of Iraq against the occupiers. The blame on Fallujah residents for the killing of the six Shiites is not true, and it was done by the Americans and their collaborators and we are challenging those who prove the contrary. We will punish those who are collaborating with the Americans in stopping the resistance in Fallujah and we condemn the killing of our innocent brothers in Shoalah, Sadr City, Najaf, Karbala and Basra who were helping Fallujah in the past. We appreciate the heroic action of (cleric) Muqtada Al Sadr who supports us in our suffering and his assistance in resisting the Americans." STORYLINE: A group claiming to represent fighters in Fallujah threatened on Monday to punish anyone working with U.S. forces outside the Sunni-Muslim dominated city. In a videotape obtained by Associated Press Television News, the General Command of the Martyrs Groups of Fallujah repeated denials that they had any connection to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the Jordanian-born militant suspected of masterminding a series of coordinated attacks on police and security forces last week that killed 100 people. The fighters, who appeared in the videotape wearing kefiyehs (checked headscarves) around their faces and carrying rocket propelled grenades, said its fighters would "publicly punish everyone who deals and works with the Americans in hitting the resistance in Fallujah." Coalition forces have maintained that al-Zarqawi has operated out of Fallujah, a hotbed of insurgent activity in the middle of the so-called Sunni Triangle. The United States has launched three airstrikes on the town over the past week targeting suspected safe houses officials claimed were used by the Jordanian militant. But residents and clerics in Fallujah deny the claims, saying that the United States has used al-Zarqawi as a pretext to target residents of the city who have stood up to the occupation of Iraq. The videotape surfaced only hours after the U.S. military denied that al-Zarqawi had been caught. U.S. Marines besieged Fallujah for three weeks in April in a bloody operation that ended with an agreement handing security to a new "Fallujah Brigade" made up largely of local residents and commanded by officers of Saddam Hussein's former army. In the latest airstrike, which took place Friday, the U.S. military said 15 people were killed. But the area's mayor said the house targeted was empty.

PERU: LORI BERENSON CONVICTION LATEST
TAPE_NUMBER: EF01/0065 IN_TIME: 04:19:56 - 10:24:10 // 19:10:43 LENGTH: 01:40 SOURCES: APTN RESTRICTIONS: FEED: VARIOUS (THE ABOVE TIME-CODE IS TIME-OF-DAY) SCRIPT: Spanish/Nat XFA A Peruvian prosecutor says a U-S citizen, whose treason conviction was overturned by Peru's military court, should now face a civilian retrial for collaboration with leftist rebels. Lori Berenson, a 31-year-old New York native, was sentenced to life in prison in 1996 by a military court on charges of helping the Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement plan a takeover of Peru's Congress. But after years of pressure from the United States, Peru's top military court overturned her conviction in August, granting her a new trial by a civilian court. Berenson has denied claims that she was involved in the takeover, which was thwarted. After nearly five months of investigation and procedural delays, state prosecutor Maria del Pilar Ramirez said on Tuesday that she had formally recommended that Berenson be tried as a collaborator, a charge punishable by a minimum of 20 years imprisonment. Pilar Ramirez said her report would be evaluated by a Superior Court prosecutor who will decide whether to request an open trial. Berenson's lawyer Jose Luis Sandoval said the Superior Court could decide as early as next week whether enough evidence exists to move to trial. Police said the plan to take over Congress was foiled by Berenson's arrest and a raid on a rebel safe house where she admittedly lived for a time in 1995. Berenson maintains that she never knew her former housemates were members of the rebel group. She was arrested in November 1995 on a bus with the wife of a top rebel leader. Berenson said the rebel leader testified during recent pre-trial hearings that Berenson was unaware of the group's rebel activities.
