STORYLINE:
After another night of air assaults, and increased US military pressure in and
around Baghdad, evidence of the fierce US-led bombardment could be seen in
Iraq's capital on Sunday.
The city's al-Kindi teaching hospital and the al-Numan hospital said Sunday they
received many injured civilians.
Doctor Osama Saleeh, an orthopedic surgeon at the al-Kindi hospital, said staff
had worked around the clock to treat one-hundred-and twenty patients they had
admitted since Saturday.
He said the injured were at "top emergency status" and that the operating
theatre was in constant use treating them.
APTN images from the hospital shows several wounded civilians, including
children and teenagers, being treated for limb wounds.
Exact numbers of injured are unknown since the US-led on Iraq started, but Red
Cross workers say that since Friday (April 4) several hundred war wounded and
dozens of dead had been brought to four city hospitals.
APTN also filmed destroyed vehicles and buildings in residential areas on
Sunday.
Also Sunday, Iraqi authorities said they had destroyed a US tank on the
outskirts of Baghdad.
Iraqi TV showed footage of Iraqi fighters standing on the tank and posing and
waving their weapons in the air.
APTN later filmed the tank - along with one that appears to be Iraqi - and other
military vehicles and hardware destroyed on a road in the outskirts of Baghdad.
A large crowd of local people gathered in the area that appears to be the site
of a battle that may have taken place several hours before.
However, despite the battle moving to Baghdad, some parts of the Iraqi capital
had the appearance of continuing normal life.
In one area, residents emerged during the morning to buy fruit and vegetables at
a street market.
Meanwhile, Iraqi men, prepared to fight, were on the streets on Sunday. Many
were in positions behind sandbags - and vowing defend Baghdad from U.S. troops.

STORYLINE:
The unforeseen perils of war were harshly underlined again on Sunday, when three
soldiers were accidentally machine-gunned by a colleague who was cleaning his
weapon.
The soldiers are part of the 101st Airbourne division, currently just north of
Najaf, in central Iraq, and heading towards Baghdad.
A clip of ten to fifteen rounds were discharged in a matter of seconds - it
could have been worse, a full clip would have held more than a hundred bullets.
With the trigger mechanism disabled, the burst of fire would have been
impossible to stop.
The men have been helicoptered out for treatment - they are expected to survive.
Meanwhile the infantry of 101st Airbourne continue to press north, passing
through villages, towns and cities, securing the terrain as they go.
Some Iraqis here in central Iraq are welcoming the coalition forces.
Bur long-term problems are likely, this entire area (shot 10) is one huge
minefield.
Engineers have already cleared hundreds of mines, but there are thought to be
thousands, perhaps tens of thousands yet to be dealt with across the country.

Baghdad - Recent
11. Exteriors of Russian embassy
STORYLINE:
A convoy of Russian diplomats including the ambassador to Iraq came under fire
Sunday while evacuating from Baghdad, the Kremlin said.
A Foreign Ministry official said it appeared that four or five people were
wounded but that their injuries were not life-threatening.
The U.S. and Iraqi ambassadors were immediately called to the Russian Foreign
Ministry, but Russia did not indicate whether it believed coalition or Iraqi
forces were responsible.
U.S. Central Command said initial field reports indicated the incident took
place in Iraqi-controlled territory and that no coalition forces were in the
area.
The convoy was fired upon as it was moving toward the Syrian border, the Russian
Foreign Ministry said. Russian officials had long ago evacuated most of the
embassy's staff, but a core team had remained until Sunday, including Ambassador
Vladimir Titorenko, who was in the convoy.
The Interfax news agency quoted an unnamed source in the convoy as saying the
group was first fired on about 8 kilometers (5 miles) outside Baghdad after it
tried to drive around shooting incident seen on the road ahead.
The convoy continued after the wounded were treated and stopped when it saw a
column of jeeps about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the city, the source said.
The group stopped, sending ahead one car with a flag to explain who they were.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said preliminary indications were
that four or five people were wounded and that their injuries were not
life-threatening. The ministry said there were 23 people in the convoy,
including several journalists.
The Foreign Ministry U-R-G-E-N-Tly called in the U.S. and Iraqi ambassadors and
asked them to take all measures necessary to guarantee Russian citizens' safety
in Iraq, to investigate the circumstances of the attack and punish those
responsible.
Leaving the ministry, U.S. Ambassador Alexander Vershbow said his government was
investigating and trying to gather information from allied commanders in the
area, but did not know who fired on the Russians.
Vershbow confirmed the United States had been aware of the planned evacuation in
advance and said the U.S. side would do its best to expedite the evacuation.

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Brigadier-General Vincent Brooks, US Centcom deputy

(Over aerial video shots)
"This target was west of Kirkuk, in northern Iraq, on the 2nd of April. What
you just saw was two sets of black smoke, that was the firing of the
anti-aircraft system at this aircraft that was conducting the attack. So just a
reminder that these are not benign actions that occur, these are combat actions,
and our pilot have done very very well, and been very effective. Lets continue

(Over aerial video shots)
"The second video shows a regime aircraft located near the al-Tukadam airfield,
this was struck on April 4. As I mentioned, we're attacking all identified
aircraft, to prevent them from flying for combat purposes, but also to prevent
the potential delivery of weapons of mass destruction, chemicals particularly,
from aircraft."
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Brigadier-General Vincent Brooks, US Centcom deputy
director of operations:
(Over aerial still shots)
"I also have to products to show you from recent precision attacks against
assets of the regime. The first one is a regime command and control facility

weapons that were used, each one represented by a blue arrow. This is the
pre-strike.. and the post-strike please.. varying degrees of destruction because
the weapons system chosen have varying degrees of explosive capabilities, and
that's by deliberate design."

"The second image I want to show you is a command and control facility near

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Brigadier General Vincent Brooks, US Centcom deputy
director of operations:
"As we are now able to operate around or within Baghdad, we see indications that
the regime continues to put civilians and civilian areas at increasing risk. The

intentionally placed next to the buildings of a residential area. (over aerial
still shot) Although it's a little difficult to see, each blue arrow shows a
piece of military equipment that's pushed right up against the side of the
building. In some cases there are multiple pieces of equipment. This is a
residential area, we don't know if these are houses per-se, but clearly is a
residential area."
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Brigadier-General Vincent Brooks, US Centcom deputy
director of operations:
"We however will continue to discriminate in our targeting, we will continue to
be selective and seek precision in all we do, but it is clear at this point that
the risk is increasing to the civilian population because of decisions made by
the regime leaders."

"And as we've seen in other places, a sports utility vehicle approached the

attempts to cause the vehicle to halt, it continued approaching the checkpoint,
and this again as I mentioned was near a populated area. There was a young
sergeant in charge at that particular checkpoint and he saw some objects in the

threatening vehicle."

proximity to the checkpoint. And finally from the side..)

STORYLINE:
The United States Central Command on Sunday released video of aerial attacks by
coalition aircraft and missiles on Iraqi positions that it said showed it's
efforts to cripple the Baghdad regime while protecting the infrastructure of
Iraq for the future.
Brigadier-General Vincent Brooks, US Central Command's deputy director of
operations, told a news briefing in Qatar that the attacks had struck at
military targets, and at facilities that allowed the Iraqi leadership to
co-ordinate resistance against coalition forces.
Brooks warned that there were further signs that Iraqi forces were placing
military equipment in residential areas, and that the danger to Iraqi civilians
had worsened "because of decisions made by the regime leaders."
Brooks described an apparent suicide attack at Sanawah, near Najaf, when a car
was reportedly driven at speed towards a coalition checkpoint, ignoring
"non-lethal" attempts by US 82nd Airborne troops to make it stop.
The US troops opened fire on the car, which then exploded, Brooks said, because
the it had been filled with household gas cylinders with the intention of
blowing it up in an attack on the checkpoint.
