MOZAMBIQUE: FLOODING DISASTER: LANDMINES
TAPE_NUMBER: EF00/0281 IN_TIME: 19:12:44 // 20:07:08 - 20:34:35 LENGTH: 02:33 SOURCES: APTN RESTRICTIONS: No Access Internet FEED: VARIOUS (THE ABOVE TIME-CODE IS TIME-OF-DAY) SCRIPT: English/Nat Mozambique is facing a new danger - it's feared that the floods have moved some of the two (m) million landmines left over from the country's civil war. Mine clearance started shortly after the end of the war in 1992, but last month's floods have made the massive job even more complicated. Now mine clearance workers from the United Nations Development Programme are training sniffer dogs to help look for the hidden explosives. It's vital that areas are made safe before Mozambique's shattered infrastructure can be repaired. These pylons were twisted out of shape by the sheer force of last month's floods . Restoring power to Mozambique is one of the government's top priorities. But any power workers face the danger of landmines that may have been swept away during the floods. Mine clearers have been urgently clearing a corridor to reach downed power pylons along the Nkomati River, northwest of the capital Maputo, near the border with South Africa. The river's muddy waters have receded, but they may have carried mines from a bridge that was washed away upstream. Workers have refused to put up new power pylons along the river until the space is swept for mines. SOUNDBITE: (English) "In order to put back the (electricity) towers the contractors want us to clear this area and make sure there is no contamination, supposed contamination from the mines that there were supposed to be on that bridge and that is where we see that now we're going to have a problem from the mines that have been washed up - nobody knows." SUPER CAPTION: Jack D'Almeida, UN mine clearance expert Jackie D'Almeida, a former Mozambican soldier, leads a 500-man team that has been steadily removing mines since shortly after the war ended in 1992. Scouring one of Africa's largest countries for an estimated two million landmines planted during a civil war is backbreaking work in the best of times. But last month's floods have made the massive job even more complicated. SOUNDBITE: (English) "We know that large chunks of land have been displaced and some of this land was mined. So there is a big chance that some mines may have been swept down the river." SUPER CAPTION: Trig (last name not known) UN Development Programme Since the civil war ended, more than one thousand minefields have been identified across Mozambique. But D'Almeida estimates that perhaps 100 or more were submerged by the devastating floods that hit two weeks ago. Gone are sticks that marked the fields, along with the red-and-white signposts featuring a skull and crossbones. More importantly, the de-mining teams have no idea where the old mines will be once the high waters are gone. The United Nations Development Programme has been helping out by training sniffer dogs to find the explosives. This mine was planted to test the dogs - and they passed with flying colours. SOUNDBITE: (English) "As you can see this is a PMN, that is with the explosives and the metal contamination. This is just to see how the dogs - the dogs they sniff the explosives and the detector, as you can see, caught the metal sound." SUPER CAPTION: Jackie D'Almeida, UN mine clearance expert Part of the difficulty with clearing mines in Mozambique is that they were planted indiscriminately. During the civil war from 1975-1992, the government army and rebel fighters buried mines without any rational military reasoning. They also left no records or maps of where they were hidden. As a result, mine fields are most often uncovered when women and children working and playing in rural areas step on the mines. Shortly after the war, there were an average of 40 mines accidents a month, and about 15 were fatal. The mine clearing effort, combined with an extensive awareness campaign, had cut the number of accidents to about four a month recently. But even experts, like Virgilio Estevao Matavel, who is a former mine clearance worker, can get caught. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Then I was working in the place which was cleared by de-miners. Then, the time which I was walking, I pressed that mine and then I got that accident." SUPER CAPTION: Virgilio Estevao Matavel, Former mine clearance worker Since the floods, mines have been reported in several areas previously believed to be mine-free, but the clearance team have not yet been able to reach the remote areas. Much of their painstaking mapping efforts over the past five years may now be essentially worthless. The years of toil have uncovered 13,000 mines - and about 10 million pieces of harmless metal. SHOTLIST: Moamba, Mozambique - 10 March 2000 1. Pull out from broken pylons to reveal mine clearance personnel looking for mines 2. Close-up red U-N sign saying "Beware of mines" 3. Um Mine's still still unfolding. I don't, I don't want to compare my medals. Um Getting to the point in my career where it's, it takes its toll. I'm not, I'm not built to handle the pressure, just having my support team behind me. What it took to get me through trials and get me to the Olympic Games. Um I was actually talking, talking to my agent. I want to put her on the spot. I'm not sure where Erica is, but I was taking an elevator ride with her for media day and she was talking about Toyota, getting my siblings here, getting rooms for them, my therapist, I needed her here. Um Just the support that went into this and knowing that I can't do it by myself. Um So having family, Toyota, Speedo, um my wife, my agent, my team doctor, uh therapist, like having them here in person. I had therapy sessions at the games. Um So it's, it's tough. I can't, I'm not built for this. I can't do it on my own. So, I think leaning on them seeing when my, when my red flags are coming up and then talking with me through the whole games. Facetiming. Um Yeah, it's some things have gotten, uh, worse for me in, in my career because like I said, I'm, I'm just not, I'm not built for this, I'm built to train. Um I'm built to train tough but the pressure, the competition, um the lights, the media wasn't designed. It's not my, it's not my DNA.”
\n

\n
Coy Wire, CNN: Um, I don't know, that's in anyone's DNA and the fact that you're making the effort to uh to correct it as much as you can, you know. But it was so inspiring, you know, I think everyone watching your heartbreak, you know, I was getting emotional as a former athlete. I mean, how do you describe what goes through those moments and, and what leads to those moments?
\n

\n
Caeleb Dressel, Olympic Swimmer: “Yeah, I mean, you train whole life for a race that boils down to a couple of seconds. Um Yeah, and then when it's over, it's over. So, it's, it's, it's devastating, it's heartbreaking. Um You put all that effort into something, and you wanted different results and then all of a sudden there's, there's guys that are better than you on that day and there's nothing you can do about it. So, yeah, I was, I was heartbroken. I needed, I needed to cry. Um And I'll probably have a couple when I get home. I'm reflecting on the meet and then hoping it'll uh subside and I can enjoy, enjoy my friends my family when I get home. But yeah, I'll probably hold on to this for a bit. It takes a while for me to digest these things. Um, and then I'll, I'll work through it and see what the future will hold for me.”
\n

\n
Coy Wire, CNN: This time was unique for you. You looked up in the stands, you not only saw your wife but you saw your baby boy, August up there. What was that?
\n

\n
Caeleb Dressel, Olympic Swimmer: “Like, like, you know, the six and three years old is what you're saying? I know you're missing them like crazy. At least I got to see August on deck. Yeah. Just checking that box. Boxes I never thought of even creating throughout my life. Him seeing me make the, the uh Olympic team for the US and then watching me win a gold medal like things that if you asked me two years ago, a year ago, if I thought that, you know, one day, do you think my son would watch me win a gold medal? Nope. Uh I didn't think I would probably have any gold medals. Um So it's just, it's really inspiring, really humbling how far the sport has taken me. Um I'm talking with you now on a rooftop in Paris. Oh, I didn't know. I didn't know it was that I didn't know it was back then. Um Yeah, like it's just taken me some of the best places I met some beautiful people along the way. You included um, and I just having August be a part of that journey with me for a sport that means so much.”
\n

\n
Coy Wire, CNN: And I heard, uh, you and wife, you have a new nickname for August for your son. Tell us about that?
\n

\n
Caeleb Dressel, Olympic Swimmer: “You mean Augie-Dog?”
\n

\n
Coy Wire, CNN: Where did you get the nickname?
\n

\n
Caeleb Dressel, Olympic Swimmer: “Uh, it was, um, that's all Snoop.”
\n

\n
Coy Wire, CNN: Snoop Dogg nicknamed your son? That’s legendary.
\n

\n
Caeleb Dressel, Olympic Swimmer: “You have to roll with it, you have to roll with it. Yeah, it's actually Uncle Snoop, by the way. Um, Uncle Snoop and Auggie Dog.”
\n

\n
Coy Wire, CNN: Yeah. All right. Well, Snoop Dogg is famous for having a pin here, but I no longer need a Snoop Dogg pin because I got a Caleb Dressel pin y'all.
\n

\n
-----END-----CNN.SCRIPT-----
\n

\n
--KEYWORD TAGS--
\n
OLYMPICS PARIS FRANCE DRESSEL SWIMMER MEDALIST
\n
