The scheduled appearance at the City of Westminster Magistrates Court was the first time that the suspects, all of whom were charged on Monday with terrorism offences, would appear in public since being arrested on August 10. Eight people were each charged with two offences, conspiracy to commit murder and preparing acts of terrorism. One person, a 17-year-old, was charged with possession of articles that could be used to prepare a terrorist act and two people were charged with failing to disclose information that could help prevent a terrorist act. One person was released without charge, while 11 remain in custody but have not yet been charged. Nine of those charged are from London, according to a Bank of England list of suspects whose assets were frozen following the arrests. Two are from suburban High Wycombe, 30 miles (50 kilometres) northwest of London.

No red carpet for Trump, says London"s Khan
By Samuel Burke and Hilary Clarke
LONDON (CNN) -- London Mayor Sadiq Khan has reiterated his opposition to US President Donald Trump being afforded an elaborate state visit when he comes to the UK next year.
"State visits are different from a normal visit and at a time when the President of the USA has policies that many in our country disagree with, I am not sure it is appropriate for our government to roll out the red carpet," Khan told CNN in an interview Monday.
Last week, the White House confirmed that Trump"s state visit to the United Kingdom has been delayed until 2018.

The delay comes amid concern that there will be mass protests against Trump in the British capital.
Trump met with UK Prime Minister Theresa May at the G20 summit in Hamburg and told reporters he would be visiting London.
May"s offer of a state visit, which typically includes a banquet with the Queen, was made during her visit to Washington in January, just days after Trump"s inauguration.
Khan, the first Muslim mayor of a western capital city, did not, however, rule out meeting with the US President, if offered the chance.

"If someone has views that I think can be changed I am ready to play my role," he told CNN.
"If you somehow think it is not possible to be a Muslim and a proud westerner I am happy to disabuse you of that idea, whether you are a reporter for CNN or Donald Trump."
CNN has reached out to the White House for comment.
Khan and Trump"s relationship got off to a famously bumpy start over Khan"s opposition to Trump"s decision to bar from the US people from a list of mainly Muslim countries.
Then, after a terror attack on London Bridge last month that left eight people dead, Khan"s reassurance to Londoners that there was "no reason to be alarmed" by the increased police presence drew an extraordinary rebuke from Trump on Twitter.

"At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is "no reason to be alarmed!"" Trump tweeted.
Khan responded by saying his remarks had been taken out of context because he had been referring to the enhanced police presence.

But Trump then tweeted: "Pathetic excuse by London Mayor Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his "no reason to be alarmed" statement. MSM [mainstream media] is working hard to sell it!"
Earlier this year, more than 1.8 million people signed a petition seeking to block Trump"s UK trip over fears that it would "cause embarrassment to Her Majesty the Queen."

Zoom in on officials assisting on ground in flooded area STORYLINE Bridges in Cumbria in England's picturesque Lake District were issued with urgent safety checks on Sunday after several were swept away by severe flooding caused by the worst storms ever recorded in Britain. Police and army experts said they were urgently checking the safety of about 1,800 bridges after several collapsed and another one was feared in imminent danger following the devastating floods. Heavy rainfall has ravaged England's popular Lake District, with more than one-thousand homes flooded and several river crossings destroyed. Police on Sunday said that concerns over the safety of bridges have crippled the region's road network. On Sunday, police officers were monitoring Calva Bridge in Workington, which officials fear could be in danger of collapsing, threatening power supplies in the surrounding area. Calva Bridge is around half a mile upstream from Northside Bridge, close to Cockermouth, where Constable Bill Barker was swept to his death as it collapsed on Friday. Following precautionary measures, authorities closed another six bridges on Sunday, leaving 13 bridges closed across the county. Authorities have advised people in Cumbria against returning to their homes, as forecasters predicted further downpours over the coming days which could hamper recovery efforts. Britain's Met Office said a record 12.3 inches (314.4 millimetres) of rain had fallen near Cockermouth, the hardest-hit town, in 24 hours. Military helicopters were scrambled on Friday to winch people from rooftops, while debris floated down the town's flooded main street.

Minogue's management company said that the 36-year-old's diagnosis was confirmed this week during a visit to the southern Australian city of Melbourne, her hometown. In the statement, Minogue expressed regret at disappointing her fans. Michael Gudinski, head of Frontier Touring, the company promoting her Australian tour, said people from Australia and around the world would be thinking of Minogue and wishing her well. The Showgirl Tour, which opened in the UK earlier in the year, was to have included performances in the Australian cities of Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth over the next month. Minogue made her name as a star of the long-running Australian soap opera "Neighbours" before launching her singing career with hits such as "I Should Be So Lucky." In the past, Minogue has auctioned one of her bras to raise money for breast cancer research and has worked to raise awareness of prostate cancer, after her father was diagnosed with it.
