Acting president, Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov, holding meeting with Turkmen officials 6. Military personnel at meeting 7. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Gurbanguly Berdymuhammedov, acting president of Turkmenistan: "Foreign customers of our oil and gas have no reason to worry. Turkmenistan will strictly fulfil its obligations. There are no reasons why our supplies will stop. The government here tightly controls them (the supplies). Turkmenistan is in a stabile and calm state. All structures of power are acting properly. Turkmenistan maintains its reputation as a safe business partner and is open for anyone who wishes to invest in the country." 8. Official writing notes 9. Mid shot, officials 10. Wide shot, meeting STORYLINE: The doctor of former Turkmen President Saparmurat Niyazov described on Friday the last hours of Niyazov's life before he died of heart failure. Niyazov died in Ashgabat, the Turkmenistan capital, on Thursday at the age of 66 after 21 years at the helm of the tightly controlled country. German heart surgeon Hans Meissner told reporters Niyazov's heart "didn't get enough oxygen and suddenly stopped beating". Meissner said Niyazov was monitored by doctors and had access to the appropriate medication. "Doctors were called immediately but, despite everything they did, despite the use of modern technology, in the end they could not save him", he added. Meissner had performed heart bypass surgery on Niyazov in 1997 when the late President came to his clinic in with a very serious disease of the blood vessels feeding the heart. Niyazov held absolute power in Turkmenistan and created an elaborate cult around himself after the desert nation of 5 (m) million, which lies north of Afghanistan and Iran, gained independence when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Also on Friday, the acting president of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov reassured countries who buy oil and gas from Turkmenistan that supplies will continue. "Turkmenistan will strictly fulfil its obligations. There are no reasons why our supplies will stop. The government here tightly controls them (the supplies). Turkmenistan is in a stabile and calm state," Gurbanguli Berdymukhamedov said. "Turkmenistan maintains its reputation as a safe business partner and is open for anyone who wishes to invest in the country," he added. Commentators have suggested the authoritarian leader's sudden death could spark a geopolitical battle between Russia and the West for access to the ex-Soviet republic's enormous natural gas wealth. They say the Kremlin could seek actively to influence the choice of next president. Berdymukhamedov announced on Friday that the People's Council, a legislative body made up of about 2-thousand officials and elders hand-picked by Niyazov, will meet on Tuesday to set a date for elections and name candidates for the presidency. Turkmenistan last held presidential elections in 1992, and Niyazov won with 95.5 percent of the vote.
