SCRIPT: xfa VANITY FAIR PHOTOGRAPHER CELEBRATES AMERICAN WOMEN
STORY:ANNIE LEIBOWITZ
LOCATION: WASHINGTON
DATE: OCTOBER 26TH '99
President and Mrs. Clinton were the hosts at a White House reception last night in honour of ANNIE LEIBOVITZ, the American photographer who has snapped so many celebrities in her long and illustrious career that she has become one herself.
The president and the first lady were among the guests attending the launch of her latest exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington DC. As one of the most powerful woman in America today, Hillary Clinton was one of 70 female subjects to feature in the exhibition - a celebration of women as the millennium draws to a close.
Women enterprising and demure, overdressed and nude, glamorous and matter-of-fact. Working class women, mothers and sisters, tennis players and Hollywood stars all find their personalities revealed through Leibovitz's lens.
The exhibit, which will run until February 2000 features more than seventy portraits by Liebovitz and is intended to highlight American women ; how they look and what they do.
The photographs come from a broad spectrum of American society, from show girls to astronauts and from miners to athletes.
Leibovitz admits that she was nervous about how the photographs would look blown up to a much larger size than she was used to dealing with.
The photographer to the stars first shot to fame working for \"Rolling Stone\" Magazine and has been under contract with the magazine, \"VANITY FAIR\" since 1983. She also does some advertising work, such as the current series of \"Milk Moustache\" ads for the dairy industry (including portraits of CINDY CRAWFORD and Aerosmith rocker, STEVEN TYLER with aforesaid moustache) but she prefers to think of herself as a portraitist.
An earlier exhibit of her portraits is still on a European tour and will soon travel to Moscow.
In this show, Leibovitz says she was still surprised by the diversity she found during the project. The photographer explores the theme of desirability in the show with a pair of Las Vegas photos : one black and white picture of a serious-looking woman in ordinary clothes and the other, a shot in glaring colour of a female face and body in almost no clothes at all. Both are photos of the same woman.
The centre of the exhibit's entrance is dominated by a large portrait of apper, LIL' KIM. Leibovitz chose black and white to portray her mother, Marilyn's features. Although her mother does not approve of the picture, the rest of the family approves.
The exhibit shows a variety of styles and subjects, from true blue, working class women to the first lady. A pensive HILLARY RODHAM CLINTON sits writing at a table on the Truman balcony of the White House.
The intimate portrait of the tennis stars, SERENA AND VENUS WILLIAMS, points to a whole new generation of African American women and their tough attitudes says Leibowitz.
The photographer hopes the seventy odd \"Women\" portraits will also tour and has four more venues in mind but no firm timetable.
