Entertainment Asia/Europe: Mystikal Rape Charge - Rap star released on bail after rape charges
TAPE: EF02/0610 IN_TIME: 06:21:30 / 14:05:44 DURATION: 1:10 SOURCES: APTN RESTRICTIONS: music video/performance rights must be cleared DATELINE: File SHOTLIST APTN file - Los Angeles, USA. February 2002 1. B-Roll Mystikal (back stage at Soul Train Awards after receiving best video award) 2. Clip Video - "Shake Ya Ass" MYSTIKAL ON RAPE CHARGE "Shake Ya Ass" rapper MYSTIKAL was jailed Thursday (18JUL02) with two other men on charges they raped an acquaintance at his house. Mystikal, whose real name is Michael Tyler, surrendered to authorities early Thursday and was booked on an aggravated rape charge, police said. Leland Ellis, 36, and Vercy Carter, 34, of Baton Rouge, turned themselves in and were booked later that morning, police said. Tyler was released Thursday afternoon on $250,000 bond. Bond had not been set Thursday evening for either Ellis or Carter. All three were also charged with extortion. Authorities say they threatened to tell police that the woman had received checks from the rapper's account without his permission. The extortion charge accuses Tyler of demanding sex in exchange for his agreement not to turn the woman over to police. If convicted of the aggravated rape charge, Tyler would face a mandatory life sentence. The penalty for extortion carries a prison term of one to 15 years. Tyler's attorneys did not return calls seeking comment, nor did his record company, Jive. His hits include "Danger (Been So Long)" and the Grammy-nominated "Shake Ya ..." The gruff-sounding rapper's latest disc, "Tarantula," has gone gold. Tyler is accused of attacking the 40-year-old woman after she showed up at his house around 8 p.m. on July 3. He allegedly threatened to tell police that she had accepted a check written out to her on his checking account, even though she knew he had not approved it, said Cpl. Mary Ann Godawa, a police spokeswoman. He also threatened to hurt her and made her perform oral sex on him, according to a police statement. Tyler allegedly called two men over to his house, and when they showed up, according to police, he raped the woman in front of them, then each of the others raped her, making the same threats Tyler had made. "During the attacks, the victim was repeatedly threatened with prosecution of the checks and great bodily harm. The victim was allowed to leave the residence after the attacks. She was treated and released at a local hospital," a police statement said. Pan of hospital grounds STORYLINE: Police in the US state of Texas have reported that a young woman, whose abduction was captured on videotape as she was leaving work at a Wal-Mart store on Wednesday, was found shot to death on Friday, hundreds of kilometres (miles) away. Wal-Mart surveillance videotape from late on Wednesday appeared to show 19-year-old university student Megan Leann Holden getting into her truck and a man running up behind her and either hitting her or pushing her. Wal-Mart interior security cameras also showed a man in a dark coat, apparently the abductor, at the front entrance to the store and walking through the store. Police said the body of Holden was found on Friday on the side of the Interstate 20 highway near Stanton in west Texas, about 610 kilometres (380 miles) west of Tyler, where the store is located. They say she apparently died of a gunshot wound. A Cochise County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman said authorities in Willcox, Arizona, some 1,300 kilometres (800 miles) from Tyler, were holding 24-year-old Johnny Lee Williams for investigation in the case. Police said Williams turned up at an Arizona hospital with a gunshot wound, allegedly inflicted in a robbery attempt, and authorities realised the woman's truck was parked outside. He was to be questioned by Texas police and the FBI, who were heading to Willcox, and is suspected by police to be involved in Holden's abduction.
