Schistosomiasis screening in Uganda in 2004. Schistosomiasis is a disease caused by parasitic worms which can be contracted through contact with contaminated water. It can affect development in children, cause gastrointestinal distress and organ swelling. One scientist is examining a stool sample; the amount of worm eggs in a stool indicates the severity of an infection. This screening was part of an initiative to screen, diagnose and treat the disease in rural communities in Uganda.
