Entertainment: Punch Drunk Love - Romantic comedy from director of 'Magnolia'
TAPE: EF02/0862 IN_TIME: 14:12:57 DURATION: 4:59 SOURCES: APTN/ Columbia Pictures RESTRICTIONS: No re-use/re-sale of film/video/clips without clearance DATELINE: Cannes, May 2002 SHOTLIST: 1. Clip 'Punch Drunk Love' 2. SOT PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON (English) - "We all got along really well pretty instantly but we weren't actually sure what we were doing and we really shot a terrible movie for a couple of weeks and then through it out the window and then were able to start in on what we wanted to do. It was learning each other's rhythms and stuff." 3. Clip 'Punch Drunk Love' 4. SOT PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON on stars Adam Sandler and Emily Watson (English) - "I think that I wanted them individually because I had always thought about Adam and I'd always thought about Emily and then the thought of the two of them together really seemed to make sense somehow, they would make a handsome couple and not really thinking too much about... just thinking about what at the end of the day is good for the movie and getting past anything like are they an odd couple. You're just really putting your head in... many years from now you are not going to remember any perception about them, it's just looking at the work and wondering who the characters are and wondering are they going to look good together." 5. Clip 'Punch Drunk Love' 6. SOT PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON on Time magazine article inspiring storyline - man who bought cheap pudding for frequent flyer miles (English) - "They call him the pudding guy in the airline promotional business. He's a very smart guy and completely not nuts, not crazy at all. He's just rather clever. He lives up in Northern California with his wife and two children and the three thousand puddings." 7. Clip 'Punch Drunk Love' 8. SOT PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON on importance of music in his films (English) - "I work pretty closely with John Brion who is my composer, who is a talented guy. He was able to create a lot of the music before hand just from conversations that we had had and ideas. That became very helpful. The music really guided how we were shooting it or how the actors were performing or walking or holding hands or whatever, on and on." 9. Clip 'Punch Drunk Love' 10. SOT PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON on making film around 1 story instead of ensemble tale (English) - "It's harder for me to tell one story right now than it is to tell seven, you've always got somewhere you can go if you are making and ensemble thing, you can always cut to something else. The challenge of making one story is that there is a challenge in being simple, or attempting to being simple and trying to tell the story as directly as you possibly can. Try and do that and play around with that, I think I've learnt how to make a movie with a bunch of people but I needed to learn to make a movie with just a few." 11. Clip 'Punch Drunk Love' STORYLINE: PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON TURNS TO ROMANTIC COMEDY The critically acclaimed young director of 'Magnolia' and 'Boogie Nights', PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON, turns his hand to romantic comedy in 'PUNCH DRUNK LOVE.' Naturally, with Anderson in charge, the film has a darker edge than most rom coms that reach the big screen, and features an unusual pair in the title roles - US comedian Adam Sandler (veteran of 'Saturday Night Live' and movies like 'Big Daddy' and 'The Wedding Singer') and Briton Emily Watson (more usually associated with weighty drama like 'Angela's Ashes' and 'Gosford Park.') Anderson admits he had not settled on what kind of film he wanted to make when shooting started - and ended up ditching the first two weeks of work. One thing he was sure of was his casting. He explains he wanted both Sandler and Watson as individuals, and cast them together when he decided they made a convincing couple on screen, regardless of their respective career backgrounds. The director also produced, and wrote the screenplay - inspired by an article he read in Time magazine, about a man who bought thousands of cheap puddings to take advantage of a frequent-flyer promotion. David Phillips, a civil engineer in California, had figured out how to accumulate 1.25 million frequent-flyer miles by buying 12,150 cups of Healthy Choice pudding for dlrs 3,000. Anderson met with Phillips and bought his story. It was the launching point for Sandler's character, Barry Egan, who runs a business out of a warehouse and is hounded by seven pushy sisters, whose abuse has left him unable to fall in love. One night, he uses a phone sex service, just to talk to someone. The sleazy operators of the service then try to blackmail him, chasing him down at work and home to demand money, then sending a bunch of lowlifes to rough him up. At the same time, Barry is falling for a mysterious woman, Lena (Watson.) The budding relationship will force him to master some of his darker impulses - like bashing down the glass doors at his sister's house or smashing up a restaurant bathroom while on a date. When Lena goes to Hawaii on a business trip, Barry follows. There, the two fall in love - "punch-drunk" love. But trouble awaits back home in California, where the lowlifes are back, smashing into Barry's car and injuring Lena. In a sign that love has given him strength, the normally timid Barry fights back with a crowbar. Then he goes all the way to Utah to track down the phone sex operator, an easily excitable sort played by Anderson regular Philip Seymour Hoffman. The scene in which Barry asserts himself, getting his pursuer to back off, is among the most affecting in the movie. Running through the film is the pudding scheme; it is part of Egan's plan to win Lena and keep her. The director says another important element in all his films is the music, setting the tempo for the action. He explains he worked closely with his composer Jon Brion, playing his cast the melodies that would be running through each scene, to allow them to reflect the tempo in their acting. The result is a departure for both stars and director. After the long and weighty ensemble drama 'Magnolia,' Anderson wanted to make a lighter film - and a shorter one as well, 'Punch Drunk Love' is a mere 90 minutes long. But he admits it was more of a challenge to tell one story than seven - pointing out you can always cut to another part of the action in a multi-stranded tale. Despite the false start, 'Punch Drunk Love' looks set for a bright future. The film won Anderson Best Director at the Cannes Film Festival, and has won largely good reviews from critics. The movie also features an Anderson regular, Phillip Seymour Hoffman ('Magnolia,' 'Boogie Nights' and the non-Anderson 'Red Dragon' with Emily Watson.) 'Punch Drunk Love' is released in LA and New York on 11 October, and elsewhere in N America on 18 October.. CLEARANCE DETAILS Punch Drunk Love Columbia Pictures 1 310 244 7554

Sot Shahrukh Kahn: "We recreate the songs from the films, with the same actors preferably and try and re-do them in a way which is stage friendly for the audience who has seen them on film already. Also, it would be a novel thing for a non-Asian audience to see how come guys who are just supposed to be acting, sing and dance and fight and do all that that they do in films do it live here." 4. Clip ' From India with Love' - trailer 5. SOT Shahrukh Kahn: "I really don't know the reason why it has happened apart from the fact that there is a lot of graciousness and magnanimity that the British audiences and the British people are showing to us whether they are just Asian residents in Britain or the locals from here, the fact that they are doing such a huge thing about the Indian film industry, that in itself is a gesture that we need to respect. Also if it's just a trend or a fad that has started because Westerners are normally into fads and trends, I think it gives us an opportunity and we should take it as an opportunity to build upon it." 6. VS B-roll Shahrukh at premiere 7. Sot Shahrukh Khan ( about comparisons to Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise): "I think the comparisons are not in terms of any which way comparing the talents or comparing the looks or anything of that sort. It is a little embarrassing to me because I think they're both absolutely marvellous and great achievers as far as acting is concerned or stardom is concerned or productions are concerned. But I think it's trying to make aware people of my status in my country - that's the only comparison. So if I was to tell you, look I'm making...the comparison I'm giving you is 'Leaving Las Vegas' I'm not saying it's going to be Oscar nominated or my performance is as great as Nicholas Cage's but I'm just trying to explain that that is the genre the film is in." 8. Clip 'Devdas' 9. Clip 'From India with Love' - trailer 10. SOT Shahrukh Khan: "I've done the whole film drunk actually because it's about an alcoholic, a man who takes to drinking. I don't know why I just decided to do the whole film drunk I just decided I'd be a method actor for once. When I was drunk I heard I misbehaved a lot on the sets, I've removed my clothes in front of people and I'm sure I've done it knowing fully well that I have an excuse - 'I'm sorry I'm drunk, I don't know'. I have said things to people which I've wanted to say to their face for many years but never had the guts to say, under the garb of being drunk." 11.Sot Shahrukh Khan: "We hope to make sure that when people watch this film that they will think it's worth it because it really does showcase, cinema-wise, a great talent. Technical wise, again, really leaps and bounds in the last three or four years that India has progressed and it's a very very very beautiful film, it's a really marvellous looking film. And also it is not just an escapist film from India, it is a very realistic love story based on sort of an autobiographical book written about sixty years ago." 10.B-Roll with little son 11. SOT Shahrukh Khan: "What really turns me on as an actor is the fact that I know I get letters, I hear from people that I've changed their lives and whether it's a love story I'm doing or a bad guy, somewhere down the line it does effect some people. It gives you a sort of a control in a strange way and everybody wants to control. But when I said this what I meant was that they are very important things that I've lost in life, one of them being my parents and if I could get on with life and make a life out of it with their absence, I guess if these are taken away, when I talk about stardom I don't talk about acting, nobody can take acting away from me. But if stardom is taken away I guess I'll just get by, as long as I can act." 12. Clip ' From India With Love' BOLLYWOOD'S TOM CRUISE GEARS UP FOR GLOBAL FAME One of Bollywood's biggest stars is helping the rest of the world catch on to the pleasures of Indian cinema. SHAHRUKH KHAN is known as the Tom Cruise of Bollywood, and his fame is spreading well outside India. London has begun a summer of all things Bollywood, with a host of films, shows and exhibitions celebrating Indian cinema. Department store Selfridges has launched its '23 and a half days of Bollywood' bonanza, Andrew Lloyd Webber's new musical 'Bombay Dreams' is on its way, and Khan himself is starring in 'FROM INDIA WITH LOVE', a stage showcase of Bollywood hits featuring five of India's biggest stars. The show, which will visit Manchester and London in June, also stars Amitabh Bachan, Aamir Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Preity Zinter, who will recreate some of Bollywood's best loved musical numbers on stage. Western fans are told the line up is the Bollywood equivalent of putting the cast of 'Oceans Eleven' in one place. Shahrukh explains the show will not just appeal to firm fans of Indian film, it will show non-Asians why actors sing, dance and fight in Bollywood film. He adds he does not know why there has been an explosion of western interest in Bollywood, but even if it is a trend, he sees it as an opportunity for Bollywood filmmakers to build on. So far, Khan's own significance in India has been illustrated by comparing him to Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt - an explanation that makes him blush. Khan insists he does not want to imply his talent or looks are equal to the two Hollywood superstars, merely to explain his status in his own country. Similarly, he says his latest film 'Devdas' can be thought of as of the same genre as 'Leaving Las Vegas'. The film is also pushing Bollywood into the limelight. The movie, a tale of doomed love told through 10 song-and-dance numbers, will feature in the non-competitive section of the Cannes Film Festival. "Devdas" will premiere at Cannes on May 15, two weeks before its release in India. It is the first mainstream Bollywood movie invited to the elite French film festival. Only offbeat Indian films, such as "Salaam Bombay," which focused on the lives of street children in India's financial and entertainment capital, have shown at Cannes in the past. Shahrukh Khan stars alongside Madhuri Dixit and Aishwarya Rai in the movie, based on a 1917 Indian novel that has inspired seven films in four Indian languages and a 1928 silent version. Khan explains 'Devdas' is a beautiful movie, showing off India's marked progress over the last few years on the technical side of cinema, and telling a realistic love story at the same time. In the movie Khan plays the young aristocrat, Devdas, who spurns his childhood love, played by Rai, when his father frowns on their relationship because her family is poorer. Unlike most Indian movies, where rich boy-poor girl sagas end in happiness, Devdas is a tragedy in which the young man realizes his mistake too late. Khan's character is an alcoholic, and the star explains he decided to turn to method acting for once and 'do the film drunk', getting into an impressive number of scrapes as a result. In real life, Khan is a devoted husband to his wife Gauri, and father to 2 children. He lost both his parents - his father in 1981, and his mother in the early '90s. The star says with their deaths, he has already lost the most important thing in his life, so if his star status disappeared suddenly, he could carry on without it easily. However, Khan makes a clear distinction between celebrity and acting - that, he says, nobody could ever take away from him. A growing number of fans around the world will be very relieved to hear it. U OF M RIOTS 2 - 2009
A Saturday night party CELEBRATING THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA’S Spring Jam festivities LED TO MINNEAPOLIS POLICE IN RIOT GEAR AND TEAR GASSED CROWDS. Police from the campus and the city of Minneapolis responded about 8 p.m. to a party that got out of hand in the Dinkytown neighborhood near campus. Police say students caused damage to cars and started a fire in the street, and threw rocks and bottles at officers when they arrived. The crowd of students allegedly grew to several hundred, and more than 60 officers were on the scene. ONLY Twelve people WERE PLACED under arrest

HAROLD LLOYD - 3RD GENIUS
CRAZY DUI BLACK GUY - 1984
Broward Co. Deputies made the arrest. He was pulled over in the car having romantic relations with a female in a car. He was very agitated after getting arrested because he steadfastly claimed that he wasn’t driving! Deputy Rick Swope (who is now retired) told me that this suspect contested the dui case in court and ultimately was found not guilty!
