Hong Kong Fugitive - US man accused of raping daughter, posting video online, in court

Tilt down of the Eastern Law Court Building STORYLINE: An American man said on Friday he wants to challenge a US request to extradite him to the United States for allegedly raping his daughter and videotaping the attack, a Hong Kong legal official said. Kenneth John Freeman, a fugitive on America's most-wanted list, showed no emotion as he appeared for his first hearing in a Hong Kong courthouse wearing handcuffs. After a 13-month global manhunt, Freeman was arrested on Tuesday while trying to enter Hong Kong on a bus at the busy Lok Ma Chau border crossing with mainland China. He resisted arrest and scuffled with four police, leaving scratches and bruises on himself and the officers, said a senior police detective inspector. The muscular Freeman, 44, a bodybuilder and computer expert, said on Friday that he wanted to contest the US extradition request, according to the deputy principal consul for the Hong Kong government's international law division. The case was adjourned until July 3 to give the US time to make a formal extradition request and provide supporting documents. Under a US-Hong Kong extradition treaty, America has 60 days to make the request, the deputy principal consul said. Freeman was living in the northwestern US city of Seattle when he fled America last year, months after his 17-year-old daughter told her mother he had assaulted her four years earlier. Freeman has been charged in Benton County Superior Court in the state of Washington with three counts of rape of a child and jumping bail. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if convicted.
