STORYLINE:
Washington D.C., the US capital, is gearing up for the scores of protesters planning to take to the streets on Friday for the start of a two day International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting.
The Department of City Works is setting up hundreds of barricades around the World Bank in an effort to keep the protesters at a distance.
The workers are also removing all of the rubbish bins from around the area, fearing protesters could use them as weapons against the police.
The meetings of the 184-nation IMF and World Bank will cover just two days, after initial plans from a week of activities.
With thousands of protesters expected to demonstrate against global capitalism and a potential war with Iraq, organisers wanted to keep the costs of security down by reducing the number of days for meetings.
Protesters have pledged to try to shut down the capital on Friday by tying up traffic.
Demonstrations on Thursday, against the World Bank and world poverty, were peaceful.
They marched and chanted in front of a hotel in the city centre as hotel security and motorbike police watched from the sidelines.
