Created in 1980 by the United Steel Workers of America, "Faces of a Union" features some of the 1.4 million Americans who were union members. The film includes images of American and Canadian factories and production, as well as striking workers on the picket line (1:17) demanding their rights. At 1:26 workers clock into a Kaiser Aluminum plant. At 2:16 new union members learn about their membership rights and put on unions pins. At 2:35 historic footage of workers are shown. At 2:45 coal and iron ore mines are shown as well as processing facilities and steel mills (3:02). Working conditions were dangerous and pay was often poor. At 3:30, the story of the 1936 C.I.O. effort to organize workers, led by Philip Murray (3:51) is described. At 4:01 the successful organization of the union is shown. At 4:27 open pit mining operations are shown with union workers, metal fabrication (4:48) and smelting (4:57), and more. At 5:49 textile and furniture workers are shown as well as copper wiring, welding, and assembly line operations.
