STAR SPANGLED EXPLOSION 2008
A fireworks store in Evanston, Wyo. burst into flames last night. Now investigators are try to figure out what happened. The fire engulfed the store, sending fireworks flying everywhere, and it was all caught on tape. Even police say this was an amazing sight, and we have exclusive dashboard camera video from the first officer on scene. Evanston police say the fire started around 1:30 am. They found out about it when heat from the fire shattered a window and set off an alarm. Capt. Rusty Megeath, with the Evanston Fire Department, said, "I had a major fire throughout the whole building. I had sporadic fireworks discharging, going in all different directions and everything else, and an extreme amount of noise associated with it. The building was completely engulfed when we got here. It was a total loss. We just sat back and made sure nothing was going to extend off premises." The building belongs to an affiliate of Black Cat Inc., one of three major fireworks dealers in the country. The building is right off of Exit 3 along Interstate 80. Firefighters have not put any water on it for fear of the roof collapsing. Officials say the building was fully stocked with fireworks, and every 30 minutes, fireworks would go off. They say the fire does not look suspicious since all the doors into the building are locked. Now the fire department and the state fire marshal are investigating how this happened.
