49614 1970 VIETNAM WAR PROTESTS IN WASHINGTON D.C. MAY 9, 1970 MARCH ON WHITE HOUSE MAG SOUND FILM
This 16mm film, a home movie shot on May 9-10, 1970, shows a march on the White House. The march took place a week after the Kent State shootings, and 100,000 demonstrators converged on Washington to protest the shootings and President Richard Nixon's incursion into Cambodia. After the march, a few hundred militants spread through surrounding streets, causing limited damage. Police attacked the most threatening crowds with tear gas and made a number of arrests, including the one seen at the 12 minute mark of a white, Black Panther sympathizer.

You'll also see signs in the crowd in support of Bobby Seale, the Black Panther activist who was in prison at the time after engaging in protests at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. He and seven other defendants, thereafter known as the Chicago Seven, were tried for conspiracy to incite riots in a circus-like atmosphere that resulted in Seale being sentenced to four years in prison for contempt of court .

We encourage viewers to add comments and, especially, to provide additional information about our videos by adding a comment! See something interesting? Tell people what it is and what they can see by writing something for example: "01:00:12:00 -- President Roosevelt is seen meeting with Winston Churchill at the Quebec Conference."

This film is part of the Periscope Film LLC archive, one of the largest historic military, transportation, and aviation stock footage collections in the USA.
