STORYLINE:
PEDRO ALMODOVAR OPENS THE PARIS FILM FESTIVAL
The 17th annual Paris Film Festival opened Monday with the latest film from Spanish director Pedro Almodovar "Hable con Ella" ("Talk About Her").
"Hable con Ella" was presented out of competition of the Paris Film Festival which pays a special tribute this year to Spanish cinema, screening the nation's best movies over the festival's run.
Spanish actress Penelope Cruz introduced Pedro Almodovar as a good friend of hers and one of the reasons she became an actress.
For once in an Almodovar film, the main characters are men: Benigno (Javier Camara) in love with a young ballet dancer Alicia (Leonor Watling) and becomes her nurse when she falls into a coma; and Marco (Dario Grandinetti) who falls for a female bullfighter (Rosario Flores) who also ends up in a coma.
A host of other stars turned out for the festival's launch including Julie Gayet and Jeanne Moreau. Festival jury member Sonia Rykiel, and honorary president of the Film festival Isabelle Adjani were also on the red carpet.
Other top Spanish filmmakers due to be honoured include oscar winner Fernando Trueba (Best Foreign Movie in 1992 for 'Belle Epoque'), Carlos Saura, Ventura Pons, Carmen Maura, Rossy De Palma, Marisa Paredes, and Edoardo Noriega.
The festival's tributes to Spanish cinema include retrospectives of famous Spanish directors including Almodovar, and Saura and screenings of more recent movies.
The festival's competition films also include Spanish entries, such as 'El Bola' by Achero and 'Manas' or 'The Devil's Backbone' from Guillermo Del Toro.
The forty international films that are part of the official competition of the Paris Film Festival. will be showed all week in 3 different Parisian theaters.
The prices will be awarded Tuesday, April 9, 2002.
The Paris Festival is open to the public, who are invited to take part in several celebrity-attended screenings and debates during the week.
