A self-described "Democratic Socialist" and opponent of the Atlanta public safety training project won a primary in Cobb County Tuesday. Gabriel Sanchez unseated a Democrat and will face voters again in November, results show. </p>\n<p></p>\n<p>The effort to stop the training center has energized many liberals as well as conservatives who support law enforcement. Many activists opposed to the training center project call it "Cop City." One of the leaders of the "Stop Cop City" movement quietly showed up at the Capitol in March to qualify to run for state representative. At the time, Sanchez seemed a longshot. </p>\n<p></p>\n<p></p>\n<p>"Im currently working as a waiter to make ends meet. But I think that this is important," Sanchez told 11Alive News in March.</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Tuesday night Sanchez won his primary against a seven-year veteran, Democrat Teri Anulewicz. Her attorney husband, Chris Anulewicz, has represented a defendant in Fulton Countys election interference case. Because I think thats what makes the difference. I think the Republicans are really good at giving red meat to their base. And thats why they win despite that theyre in the minority overall," Sanchez said Wednesday. </p>\n<p></p>\n<p>While, Sanchez calls himself a Democratic socialist, Republicans say thats not what voters want to hear. </p>\n<p></p>\n<p>"While last nights results gave Georgia Republicans much to celebrate, it proved the Democratic Socialists of America are in the drivers seat of the Democratic Party of Georgia," the state Republican party wrote on the X platform. </p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Sanchez said the violence and destruction sometimes linked to "Cop City" protests are overstated by the news media. The issue, he said, is fundamental, and he makes no apology for making the case. </p>\n<p></p>\n<p>"Right now what the city of Atlanta is doing with 'Cop City' is abhorrent and they need to let (voters) have a democratic say in it and vote on it," he said. </p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Sanchez will face Republican Diane Jackson in November. Lawmakers drew District 42 as a district likely to be won by a Democrat. </p>\n<p></p>\n<p>Jackson sent 11Alive News an email saying in part:</p>\n<p></p>\n<p>My opponents win shows how extreme and out of touch with Georgians the Democrats have become. A Bemidji man accused of murdering a woman to whom he'd been romantically linked and kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 5-year-old girl in June of last year has pleaded guilty to multiple charges.Jacob William Kinn, 33, pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree murder, kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct with a person under 13.According to the criminal complaint, Bemidji police officers were called to the 3900 block of Irvine Avenue at 3:33 a.m. on June 22 of 2016, on a report of a mobile home fire at the Hillcrest Manor Trailer Park.Emergency crews arrived and found Melissa Norby's body inside the mobile home.During the investigation, police say a woman arrived at the burned-out mobile home and told police her 5-year-old daughter had been staying in the home with Norby that night. The girl was not found in the mobile home, leading to a search.During the investigation, officers learned Norby had recently rekindled her relationship with Kinn. Officers went to Kinn's home, but he wasn't there.Investigators then learned that Kinn was on probation. When Kinn was contacted by his probation agent, Kinn said, "This is probably about that missing girl," according to the criminal complaint.In an interview with two special agents, Kinn denied having any contact with the victim of the fire or the girl. But while talking to him, investigators learned Kinn's cellphone had "pinged" off a cellphone tower near Big Fork on the night of the fire.While canvassing the area, authorities found tire tracks through a wooded area, which led them to a pop-up camper. The girl was found inside the camper. Authorities said she was found on the top bunk in the camper and was wearing pajamas. Her legs had been taped together with black duct tape, and she didn't have any food, water or bathroom facilities.The girl was taken to the Family Advocacy Center, and medical workers say she had acute injuries and tape marks on her body.Search warrant affidavits say Norby may have helped kidnap the girl. According to the filings in Beltrami County, Kinn and Norby had discussed scenarios to abduct the girl so they could sexually assault her.Affidavits say the fire at Norby's mobile home was intentionally set. Documents also show her body, hands bound, was found in the debris.The young victim's aunt tells KSTP that the girl is healing and improving.She said the family is ... "pleased that (the victim) doesn't have to relive this" by taking the stand. "Her life can begin again and they can all finally have closure," she said over the phone, adding a call to action."This happens more often than we know. People have to be aware and if something doesn't look right, people need to say something."
