Crystal of beryl (beryllium aluminium silicate) protruding from a albite matrix. Beryl is normally green, but blue, yellow, red and translucent varieties are also seen. It occurs in igneous rocks like granites and pegmatites, but also in schists and gneisses, often associated with rutile. It is an ore for extracting the metal beryllium, but also an attractive semi-precious stone for use in jewellery. Albite is a plagioclase feldspar mineral. Feldspars are a very common group of silicate minerals that make up as much as 60% of the Earth's crust. This sample is from Nuristan, Afghanistan.
