MONTE CARLO RALLY 2010
The Monte Carlo Rally (officially Rallye Automobile Monte-Carlo) is a rallying event organized each year by the Automobile Club de Monaco who also organizes the Formula One Monaco Grand Prix and the Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique. The rally takes place along the French Riviera in the Principality of Monaco and southeast France. From its inception in 1911 by Prince Albert I, this rally, under difficult and demanding conditions, was an important means of testing the latest improvements and innovations to automobiles. Winning the rally gave the car a great deal of credibility and publicity. The 1966 event was the most controversial in the history of the Rally. The first four finishers driving three Mini-Coopers, Timo Mäkinen, Rauno Aaltonen and Paddy Hopkirk, and Roger Clark's 4th-placed Ford Cortina "were excluded for having iodine vapour, single filament bulbs in their standard headlamps instead of double-filament dipping bulbs." This elevated Pauli Toivonen (Citroën ID) into first place overall. The controversy that followed damaged the credibility of the event. [2] The headline in Motor Sport: "The Monte Carlo Fiasco."

Among items listed for sale were the jersey Carl Lewis wore when winning one of his nine Olympic gold medals, football boots worn during last year's World Cup, and a piece of rock from Robben Island, where Mandela was imprisoned by the apartheid government of South Africa for 18 years. Proceeds from the auction, organised by Sotheby's, will go to humanitarian organisations the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund and Amade Mondiale. No details of sale prices were released. The 89-year-old Mandela, walking slowly and escorted by his wife, was greeted at the palace by Princess Caroline and Prince Albert. Guests included U2 singer Bono, model Naomi Campbell and actor Morgan Freeman. In a speech, Prince Albert praised Mandela's efforts to fight poverty, AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), drug trafficking and organised crime. Other objects at the auction included a bedspread handmade from pieces of Mandela's silk shirts, and a leather drum given to the South African leader by singer Carlos Santana. Prince Albert also put personal items up for auction, including watches and paintings. French President Nicolas Sarkozy was to meet Mandela on Monday afternoon at Orly airport. Mandela, who won the Nobel Peace Prize, was in London last week for the unveiling of a statue honouring him.

Prince Rainier's eldest daughter, Princess Caroline, was not present, having recently given birth to a baby girl with her new husband Prince Ernst of Hanover. A host of celebrities attended the charity event held by the Grimaldi family at Monte Carlo's exclusive Sporting Club. As guests arrived they were met with a battery of society photographers clamouring for pictures. The event was the place to be seen on Friday night. The musical's composers, Luc Plamandon and Richard Cocciante, were among the audience. A spectacular firework display followed. He has immense respect for it, so I've imagined it would be good for Miss Charlene and Prince Albert to have a menu that resembles them, that praises the Mediterranean, its land and its sea. They have a beautiful property called Roquajelle nearby. We've planted vegetables everywhere and we will harvest them on Saturday. They won't be refrigerated, we will serve them on Saturday evening. Sous-chef putting fish into oven STORYLINE: Final preparations are under way in Monaco for the much-anticipated nuptials between Prince Albert II and former South African Olympic swimmer Charlene Wittstock. It's the first wedding of a reigning prince in the tiny Riviera principality since Hollywood icon Grace Kelly walked down the aisle with Albert's late father, Prince Rainier, more than 50 years ago. The couple will marry in a civil ceremony on Friday, and have a church wedding on Saturday at the palace - a Renaissance palazzo that's been home to Monaco's ruling Grimaldi dynasty for centuries. On Thursday, wedding planner Francoise Dumas was overseeing preparations at the Hotel de Paris - the venue for Friday's ceremony. She told AP Television that although it will be a "princely wedding", with many heads of state attending, the happy couple want their guests to be happy and for "it to be really like a wedding." Meanwhile, at the Monte Carlo opera house on Wednesday, chef Alain Ducasse was preparing to serve a multi-course gala dinner to more than 500 guests following Saturday's church ceremony. With three triple-star Michelin restaurants to his name, Ducasse is used to catering to the rich and famous. While being careful not to divulge exactly what's on the menu for the three-course meal, Ducasse revealed just enough to make the mouth water. "He loves the Mediterranean more than anything. He loves its flora and fauna," he told AP Television, adding that he had prepared a menu that "praises the Mediterranean, its land and its sea." Ducasse said the vegetables - local staples including tomatoes, peppers and courgettes grown at the prince's own farm - would be picked on Saturday and that the fish would be "caught in the Mediterranean on Thursday, Friday and Saturday." In honour of Charlene's roots, Ducasse said guests would "start with a wine from South Africa and finish with the bride's cake which we will decorate with flowers symbolic to South Africa in all its colours."
