The prince was met by Cuban Vice President Jose Ramon Fernandez at the consulate building in the uptown Havana district of Miramar for a short official opening ceremony. Monaco's first consul will be Monaco citizen Jean Pierre Pastor, who is also president of the Cuban real estate company, Real Immobiliaria. Princes and princesses from Britain, Sweden, Denmark and Morocco were among the royal representatives flying into the tiny Riviera principality for festivities that began with a Mass at Monaco's 19th century cathedral. 46-year-old Albert automatically took royal powers upon the death of his father in April and was appointed His Serene Highness in July, when he was sworn in before the people of Monaco in the first of a two-part investiture ceremony. This round of festivities coincides with Monaco's national day on Saturday and was intended as Albert's coming out party before foreign dignitaries and royalty, though no kings and queens were expected. Ceremonies began on a solemn note, with Monaco's Archbishop Bernard Barsi leading a morning Mass for Albert in the cliff-top cathedral where his father and mother, Hollywood beauty Grace Kelly, were married and are now buried. Accompanied by his sisters, princesses Caroline and Stephanie, Albert then proceeded to the nearby royal palace, where the Grimaldi dynasty has ruled for 700 years. There, to mark the symbolic transfer of power, Rainier's standard was presented to the royal guard for the last time at the gates of the palace, and Albert was presented with a royal standard, or banner, bearing his emblem. He then joined the rest of his family on the palace balcony. The ceremony marked an emotional farewell to Rainier, Europe's longest-serving monarch who ruled Monaco for 56 years until his death at the age of 81. After a lifetime in his father's shadow, Albert has emerged as an assured leader determined to promote dynamism in Monaco's banking industry and clean up the principality's image as a haven for tax evaders and dirty money. Other festivities planned for Saturday include a luncheon at the royal palace for invited guests.
