'The Icarus project sends a camera high into the stratosphere to take pictures of the Earth from near space. The camera is enclosed in a flight box and attached to a helium weather balloon which lifts the camera to an altitude of approximately 35,000 meters above sea level. The camera is controlled by a small micro computer which takes pictures at timed intervals in various directions. Other sensors to measure temperature, barometric pressure and altitude are incorporated into the flight box. The on board computer transmits location and altitude data to the ground station. This information is transmitted using radio teletype (RTTY) which is faster and more reliable than CW (Morse Code). '

Amateur dashboard camera footage of the meteor that exploded above the Russian city of Chelyabinsk on the morning of 15th February 2013. The meteor entered the atmosphere and exploded at an altitude of some 29.7 kilometres, causing a shock wave that shattered windows and damaged buildings, and caused nearly 1500 injuries. Scientists estimated that the meteorite weighed around 12,000 tonnes, had a diameter of around 20 metres, and entered the atmosphere at a speed of 19 kilometres per second. The main air burst had an energy of nearly 500 kilotons, some thirty times greater than the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima.
