Fentanyl painkiller drug molecule
Animation of a rotating molecular model of the synthetic opioid painkiller fentanyl. It is used as both a painkiller and an anaesthetic. It is 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin. It has become a common drug of abuse, particularly in the USA, where it is involved in more overdose deaths than any other drug. In this model, carbon atoms are black, nitrogen blue, oxygen red and hydrogen white. This clip is supplied on a transparent alpha channel background.

INFANT ANESTHESIA
THIS TWO-MONTH-OLD BOY WAS BORN PREMATURELY AND NEEDS EYE SURGERY. HE WON'T FEEL A THING, THOUGH, THANKS TO THE ANESTHESIA DRUG PUSHED INTO HIS I-V LINE. SEVERAL YEARS AGO, HE NIGHT NOT HAVE BEEN SO LUCKY. (SOT) DR. BIDANI AND HER COLLEAGUES AT TEXAS CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL HAVE BEEN USING DEEP ANESTHESIA ON BABIES FOR MANY YEARS. (SOT) IT'S TRICKY, BECAUSE THERE'S NO ROOM FOR ERROR ON SUCH A TINY BODY. THESE DOCTORS' PREDECESSORS USED TO THINK DEEP ANESTHESIA LOWERED A BABY'S BLOOD PRESSURE TOO MUCH. BUT SURGICAL TEAMS NOW KNOW THAT BABIES CAN TOLERATE DEEP ANESTHESIA. AND A RECENT STUDY SUGGESTS IT EVEN HELPS THEIR RECOVERY PROCESS BY ELIMINATING THE STRESS OF PAIN. (STANDUP) (SOT) AS FOR OUR YOUNG PATIENT, HIS VITAL SIGNS ARE GOOD...HE CAME THROUGH HIS SURGERY JUST FINE. HE'LL BE MONITORED CLOSELY AND TREATED FOR POSTOPERATIVE PAIN...MEANING HE WON'T HAVE THE ADDED ANXIETY OF DEALING WITH THAT DISCOMFORT.
