SEA LIONS
British Instructional Films Ltd presents a Classroom Film.

Sea Lions in a zoo enclosure jump down from a rocky ledge into a pool below. Someone off screen throws them fish and they catch them. A crowd watches them. It is presumably feeding time. Two sea lions swim in the pool. C/U of head of sea lion. One of the sea lions climbs up the terrace. The other dives into the pool. They eat more fish. One catches a fish in mid air as it is thrown in. One of the animals does a spectacular slide on to the rocks. C/U of the sea lion's flippers. The keeper (only his hand seen) tries to get the sea lion to "shake hands." Two sea lions have a bit of a fight. One sea lion walks on an island and eats a big fish then dives into the water around the island. We see it swim along from above. More shots of the sea lion swimming.

Acknowledgements to the London Zoo.

Note: 2 prints and 2 negs exist - check for best quality. Telecine transfer used neg.

SOUNDBITE: (English) John Walsh, World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA): "But the trick is getting food and vitamins and minerals into the animals and he's getting it (the zoo's lion) - he'll come around. The problem is also because he's been blind he hasn't got a lot of exercise and his muscles have atrophied so he has a hard time getting around. We're going to put heat, we're going to put in a generator and heat his cage so at least through the winters now he'll be warm. He's a good old boy, he's a symbol of the country. Everybody loves him, and as I say, it's sort of been the symbol of the suffering of the people has been exhibited in that animal." APTN - 13 March 1995 14. Sniper firing from within zoo 15. Wide shot of houses that he is firing at that can be seen from zoo 16. Cages in zoo and trees beyond 17. Soldier running along trench in one of the animal enclosures STORYLINE: Marjan the one-eyed lion, the most famous of the war-battered beasts at the Kabul Zoo, has died. His death comes just as international help had begun pouring in to ease the animals' plight, an official leading the aid efforts said Saturday. Marjan, believed to be around 25, probably died of kidney and liver failure connected to old age, said John Walsh, international projects director of the World Society for the Protection of Animals. The lion had a hard life. In the 1990s, an Afghan guerrilla showing off for his friends jumped over the guard rail into Marjan's den, and the lion killed him. The next day, the dead man's vengeful brother threw a grenade into the cage, and the explosion took out Marjan's eye. Last week, representatives of the WSPA toured the zoo to assess the most urgent needs in a rehabilitation effort the group is coordinating. It had planned to put a ramp from Marjan's cage to his den because he had so much trouble getting around. Walsh called Marjan a symbol of Afghanistan's travails and spirit and admitted that he had cried when he found Marjan dead on Saturday morning. With Afghanistan torn by successive conflicts, the zoo had been in desperate straits for years even before the Taliban took power. After the Islamic militia fled, though, the miserable conditions at the zoo were widely reported. Fund-raising efforts for its rescue began in many countries. Zoos around the world have raised about 400,000 dollars for the construction of a new zoo. Walsh said the Afghan government was discussing whether to have a funeral for Marjan and he suggested a campaign be started to build a statue to the lion.

"Pride & Prejudice"/Focus 'CHICKEN LITTLE' UP; BOX OFFICE DOWN "Chicken Little" remained No. 1 in the pecking order, taking in $32 million in its second weekend to beat back a flock of new movies. Debuting in second place was the sci-fi fantasy "Zathura: A Space Adventure," which grossed $14 million, according to studio estimates Sunday. Jennifer Aniston's first post-"Friends" film the thriller "Derailed," co-starring Clive Owen opened in third with $12.8 million. Rapper Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson's semi-autobiographical drama "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" premiered at No. 4 with $12.5 million, though it played in fewer theatres than its competitors. The movie has grossed $18.2 million since opening Wednesday. Also debuting in the top 10 was Keira Knightley's "Pride & Prejudice," a new take on Jane Austen's 19th century classic of romance and class conflict. The film came in at No. 10 with $2.8 million while playing in just 215 theatres, compared to 3,223 for "Zathura," 2,441 for "Derailed" and 1,652 for "Get Rich or Die Tryin'". The overall box office was down, with the top 12 movies grossing $114.7 million, off 15 percent from the same weekend last year, when "The Incredibles" was No. 1 with $50.3 million. Movie admissions are running 8 percent behind last year's, but the industry will get a big bump Friday with "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," the fourth film about the boy wizard. "This is one of those save-the-day kinds of movies," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Exhibitor Relations. "There were lines around the block for the latest book, "`The Half-Blood Prince.' I expect no different for this `Harry Potter' movie." With $80.8 million domestically in 10 days, the cartoon tale "Chicken Little" should soar past the $100 million mark by this coming weekend. That's good news for distributor Disney, whose recent animated slate has been lack-luster. "You can't crow about things if people aren't buying tickets to your movies," said Chuck Viane, Disney head of distribution. "This proves that our animation team, with their commitment and resilience, can deliver." Gaza Zoo - Gunmen steal lioness from zoo leaving behind lonely lion cub

Various of Gaza Zoo Director, Soud al-Shawaa in office 12. Pictures of Sabrina and Sakher on computer screen 13. Various of Sakher playing with teddy bear 14. Sakher in the cage STORYLINE A lion hunt is underway in Gaza after gunmen snatched a young lioness from the local zoo. The cub, called Sabrina, was seized two weeks ago, leaving her playmate Sakher confused and lonely, according to zoo officials. Four gunmen overpowered a zoo keeper before throwing a blanket over Sabrina and making their getaway. Zoo director Soud al-Shawaa said the gang also took two "talking" parrots, who can utter phrases in Arabic. Palestinian officials chose not to reveal the theft until now, hoping they could trace the kidnappers. The zoo has now offered a 1000 US dollar reward for the return of Sabrina and the two parrots. Soud al-Shawaa said Sakher is missing his playmate. "He was shocked, he also refused to eat his meat and is looking sad all the time, he is looking for his partner to come back to Gaza zoo," he said. Palestinian police think the animals are still alive and have been hidden somewhere in the Gaza strip. Sabrina reportedly weighs around 20 kilograms, but when fully grown could reach 130 kilograms. There are suspicions the lion cub was kidnapped to be kept as a mascot by a mafia-style criminal gang. The new zoo opened last month and the lions were its main attraction.
