'Penitential pilgrimage' takes pontiff to Canada's only national Indigenous church
TRENTON, CANADA - JULY 25: After apologizing Monday afternoon for the role priests and nuns played in abusing children at Canadian residential schools, Pope Francis took his message to parishioners in a Catholic Church the same evening. Not all those at the Edmonton church service were locals though, as members of the country's three Indigenous groups -- Metis, Inuit and First Nations -- traveled considerable distances to attend the historic event, including from Manitoba, the Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan. With some survivors of the residential school atrocities in the pews, the pontiff spoke of the "painful wounds" inflicted by the priests and nuns and the "betrayal of trust" committed by them. "In the name of Jesus, may this never happen again in the church," he said. The Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples is significant, as it is the lone church in Canada that blends traditional liturgies and Indigenous rituals. It also has the four poles of the traditional dwelling of First Nations, a teepee, over the altar. In 1991, Sacred Heart was designated as "Canada's National Indigenous Church." The pope arrived in Canada for a six-day visit to further the church's reconciliation with Indigenous peoples. About 150,000 Indigenous children were forced to attend one of 139 Indian Residential Schools beginning in the 1820s, with the last one closing in the 1990s. Students were in a significant number of instances subjected to physical, psychological and sexual abuse, and along with disease, as many as 6,000 died. The pope's "penitential pilgrimage" is to say, on Canadian soil, that he apologizes for the abuses. On Tuesday, the pope will join a pilgrimage to Lac Ste. Anne, a lake which is considered sacred. TAPE_NUMBER: EF01/0230 IN_TIME: 13:20:36 // 19:31:01 LENGTH: 02:10 SOURCES: APTN/POOL RESTRICTIONS: FEED: VARIOUS (THE ABOVE TIME-CODE IS TIME-OF-DAY) SCRIPT: English/Nat XFA A special U-S envoy hand-delivered a letter from President George W. Bush to Japanese Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori on Tuesday to apologize for the sinking of a high school training boat by a U-S submarine. Adm. William J. Fallon, the vice chief of naval operations, arrived on Tuesday afternoon at Yokota Air Base, a U-S military facility on the outskirts of Tokyo. He was also scheduled to meet with families of the nine Japanese missing in the accident. Fallon said he handed over Bush's letter to Mori, who asked that the United States do the utmost to salvage the sunken Japanese fishing vessel and give a full accounting of the February 9 collision. Fallon was scheduled to meet with the family members on Wednesday morning, said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda, the government's top spokesman. The U-S Embassy said the meeting would be at Ambassador Thomas Foley's residence. Fallon, the No. 2 officer in the Navy, was to also meet other government officials and hold a press conference before leaving Thursday. Despite repeated expressions of regret over the accident by American officials, many of the relatives of the missing have demanded a direct apology, and Fallon's visit was an attempt to assuage that anger. Officials here will also be looking for an explanation over the causes of the accident off the island of Oahu, and why the U-S had been slow to reveal that civilian guests were at the controls of the sub. Nine people, including four students, remain missing and are presumed dead. The nine missing were among 35 people on board the Ehime Maru fishing vessel when it sank shortly after it was struck by the U-S-S Greeneville. Bush's decision to send Fallon reflects the importance Washington places on its security alliance with Japan, which hosts about 50,000 U.S. troops. The U-S Seventh Fleet operates from a base just south of Tokyo, which is also used by American submarines. Those ties have been strained recently by a series of crimes by U-S military personnel and a statement by the top Marine on Okinawa, who called local leaders "wimps" and a "bunch of nuts" in an e-mail to his staff after a Marine was arrested for lifting a schoolgirl's skirt last month. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I'm here today to humbly and sincerely request on behalf of the government of the United States, the United States Navy and the American people, that the government and the people of Japan accept our apologies for the tragic loss of the Ehime Maru on the ninth of February this month." Various of sunken Ehime Maru on the sea bed STORYLINE: The former captain of a US submarine, which collided with a Japanese fishing vessel and killed nine Japanese boys and men last year, arrived in Japan on Saturday to personally offer his condolences for the accident. US Navy Commander Scott Waddle was at the helm of the nuclear-powered USS Greeneville when it surfaced beneath the Ehime Maru on February 9, 2001, sinking it off the coast of Hawaii. Nine of the 35 students, teachers and crew aboard the training vessel from Uwajima Fisheries High School died. His arrival comes after a long delay. Waddle had vowed to visit the victims' families in their hometown before retiring last October but was forced to postpone after Navy officials said the timing wasn't right. He plans to depart early on Sunday for Uwajima in Ehime prefecture (state), about 680 kilometers (420 miles) southwest of Tokyo, where he plans to lay flowers at a memorial inside the high school. However, with emotions still running high, it is uncertain what kind of closure his gesture will bring, local officials and lawyers say. Many victims' relatives have told prefectural (state) officials that they do not want him to visit and local officials, deferring to their wishes, are not arranging any official ceremony or meeting with Waddle. Waddle was reprimanded by a U.S. military court of inquiry, which decided against a court-martial. He was allowed to retire at full rank and pension, raising criticism in Japan that he got off lightly. Last month, the families of 33 people who were aboard the trawler agreed to a reported US$13 million compensation package from the US Navy. Meanwhile the fisheries school has commissioned a new Ehime Maru training ship. It was shown off to the public on Saturday.
