SUBMARINE ESCAPE-GEAR TESTING
The submarine Archer-fish rests on the ocean floor off the Florida keys. Two Navy volunteer test sub escape-gear and are buoyed straight to the surface in contrast to usual methods of surfacing which include frequent stops to prevent Decompression Sickness. NOTE Reporter voice-over requires additional clearances.

This U.S. Navy newsreel shows the launch of the USS Robert E. Lee, one of the new Polaris nuclear missile submarines. At :40, the USS Triton is seen in acceptance trials. This was the Navy's largest submarine, equipped with twin nuclear reactors. At 1:19, the USS George Washington, prototype Polaris SSBN, is seen at Groton. At 1:58, Navy divers from the USS Archerfish demonstrate the buoyant ascent method of escape from a crippled submarine from a depth of 300 feet. At 2:37, Sierra Sam the famous crash test dummy, is shown being used in spectacular airplane crash tests.
