SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Carla Capalli, Puerto Rico's Humane Society for Animals: "It is very dirty, the bears are not well kept, the water pool is dirty. We don't know if they are getting veterinarian care." 7. Various shots of bears in cages STORYLINE: United States authorities have seized six polar bears from a circus in Puerto Rico, saying it had violated the laws on marine mammals by keeping the arctic animals caged in the Caribbean heat. Federal marshals were guarding the bears in the southern Puerto Rican city of Yabucoa until they could be transferred at the end of the week to the Detroit Zoo, the US Department of Justice said in a statement on Tuesday. No-one from the Suarez Brothers Circus of Mexico, which was on tour elsewhere in the Caribbean, was available for comment. It had left the bears behind in Puerto Rico because other countries on the tour, including the U.S. Virgin Islands and the Dutch island of Aruba, had denied the bears access. Carla Capalli of the Puerto Rico Humane Society said that three veterinarians in Yabucoa were treating the bears, at least some of whom had bacterial infections. "They have been lying in excrement and mud, with stray dogs and cats around," Capalli said. "They're so lethargic, it's unnatural. Even with all these guards and this commotion, they're totally unfazed." Following repeated complaints from animal activists, US officials from the Justice department and the wildlife services recently visited the remaining six bears and determined their quarters were inadequate. Most of the time the bears have been kept in small cages, with occasional access to swimming pools or air conditioning, instead of the full-time access required by US law. A video tape recorded by Capalli shows the bears drooling and swaying in 113-degree Fahrenheit (44-degree Celsius) August heat without water.

KRILL ARE ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS WHY THESE ANTARTIC WATERS ARE PART OF A CONSERVATION ZONE AND ITS BALANCE IS ESSENTIAL TO OUR VERY EXISTENCE. THESE WATERS AND WILDLIFE ARE A CARBON SINK MOVING CARBON DIOXIDE FROM THE ATMOSPHERE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE OCEAN AND THAT THOUGH IS STILL BEING STUDIED. THAT IS THE ARCTIC'S POTENTIAL TO ACT AS A BUFFER TO CLIMATE CHANGE. I DIDN'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT KRILL BEFORE WE CAME HERE. CERTAINLY NOT THAT THEY WERE A KEYSTONE SPECIES HOLDING THE ANTARTIC FOOD WEB TOGETHER OR THAT THEMSELVES MOVE CARBON, ULTIMATELY TO THE OCEAN FLOOR WHERE IT CAN SEQUESTERED FOR A MILLENIA. THE JOURNEY OF CARBON STARTS WITH ALGAE WHICH PHOTOSYNTHESIZES CARBON DIOXIDE FROM THE ATMOSHPERE. \nMAACK: KRILL FEEDS ON ALGAE LIKE KIDS IN A McDONALD'S RESTAURANT. IT'S SLOPPY FEEDING. THE REMAINDER OF THE ALGAE SINKS TO THE DEEPER WATER AND THE SAME IS TRUE FOR THE KRILL POO. \nYES, IT'S A CONVERSATION ABOUT POO. CARBON RICH KRILL POO THAT ENDS UP AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS DENSE COLD WATER. KRILL SWARMS CAN MOVE TO DEPTHS OF 2,000 METERS. IT'S NOT JUST THE KRILL THAT PLAY THAT ROLE. SO TOO DO THE WHALES THAT FEED ON THE CARBON RICH KRILL, MASSES OF IT. BUT THESE ARE ALSO THE MAIN KRILL FISHING GROUNDS. IT IS A REGULATED INDUSTRY, BUT IT IS ONE THAT GREEN PEACE AND OTHERS WANT TO SEE RESTRICTED TO OUTSIDE OF THE MAIN WILD LIFE FEEDING GROUNDS. \nTHE KRILL CATCHING VESSELS ARE CATCHING 24 HOURS A DAY FOR THE WHOLE OF THE ANTARCTIC SUMMER. BACK ON GREEN PEACE'S ARCTIC SUNRISE, MARINE BIOLOGIST AND GREENPEACE CAMPAIGNER THILO IS RADIOING THE FISHING VESSEL FOR DETAILS OF THE CATCH. CAN YOU TELL SOMETHING ABOUT THE VOLUME OF THE CATCH? THE WEIGHT? 3,600 POUNDS.\nTHAT MAY SOUND LIKE A MASSIVE AMOUNT AND IT IS. KRILL DO HAVE THE LARGEST BIO MASS OF ANY SPECIES ON EARTH BUT ITS NUMBERS HAVE DECREASED, THOUGH ITS UNCLEAR WHETHER ITS FROM CLIMATE CHANGE OR OTHER FACTORS. AND GREEN PEACE IS PUSHING FOR ACTION BEFORE WE REACH A CRISIS POINT, ESPECIALLY IN A REGION AS VITAL TO OUR SURVIVAL AS THIS ONE. GREENPEACE'S MISSION IS ALSO AIMED AT DOCUMENTING THE VAST AND WILD BEAUTY OF THIS ENTHRALLING ECOSYSTEM, TO SHOW WHAT'S AT STAKE OF BEING LOST. THIS IS THE VIEW AS DAWN BREAKS. I NEVER EVEN IMAGINED ANYTHING LIKE THIS. I DON'T HAVE WORDS. I'M HONESTLY LOST. IT'S JUST -- IT'S LITERALLY TAKEN MY BREATH AWAY. IT'S SUCH AN EXTREME BEAUTY, MY BRAIN DOESN'T EVEN KNOW HOW TO PROCESS IT. IT'S BEAUTIFUL WITHIN HUH? ANDREAS SOTO, A MECHANIC ON THE ARCTIC SUNRISE FIRST CAME TO THE ANTARTIC EIGHT YEARS AGO AND HAS RETURNED NUMEROUS TIMES AS A TOUR GUIDE. DO YOU LOVE THIS PLACE? \nSOTO: I DO. I MISS IT. WHEN I'M AT HOME AND I SEE THE PICTURE I'M REALLY MISSING THIS PLACE. AS YOU CAN SEE IT'S BEAUTIFUL. REALLY CALM AND REALLY AMAZING PLACE. I THINK IT SHOULD BE PROTECTED. \nMAN HAS BEEN UNABLE TO DOMINATE THIS UNFORGIVING REGION, THAT DOES NOT MEAN IT'S IMMUNE TO HUMAN DESTRUCTION. Jeff MacInnis is using a 6 meter, 600 lb Hobie Cat catamaran called "Perception" for an attempted 3000 mile Arctic crossing of the Northwest Passage. He started in the Northwest Territories, Canada at Inuvik in 1986 and, due to uncertain weather, will take three summers to complete the task. He and his cameraman will continue from Cape Anne in the Northwest Territories through the Canadian Arctic Archipelago and travel over ice and through storms as he attempts to reach his goal. AP gained exclusive access to the backstage area, which has a punk theme, and spoke to Ged Doherty, Chairman of the Brits, about the performers for 2008. "Rehearsals are all going great," he told the AP, "obviously the outstanding contribution this year is Sir Paul McCartney, which we are absolutely thrilled about, he's never been to the Brits before, I know for years we have tried to get him to do it, and for whatever reason it's not been the right time but this year he has agreed to do it, so that's a major coup for us, for the show, Amy Winehouse will be performing again, which is a great coup for the show, and the Klaxons, and Rihanna, Leona Lewis, Mark Ronson, Kaiser Chiefs, to name but a few, Kylie, can't forget Kylie, so it's going to be an incredible night." Leading the nominations are Take That, Mika and Leona Lewis, with four nominations apiece. They will also go head-to-head in the Best British Album and Best British Single categories. Take That's nominations include Best British Group and Best Live Act - pitting them against Arctic Monkeys who are also up for Best British single for the second year running. Other notable acts to make the grade include Arctic Monkeys, Mark Ronson, Kaiser Chiefs and Kate Nash who each have three. Amy Winehouse has one nomination. Her cover of the Zutons' "Valerie" with producer Mark Ronson is in the running for Best British Single. And after the recent will she won't shes from the Grammys and the Mercurys, Doherty told the AP Winehouse's performance this evening is an absolute cert. "No, she's absolutely wanted to do it from day one, there's obviously been quite a lot going on around her and we were just delighted when we got the call saying she was definitely coming, and it was only when the equipment turned up last night for us, and the band were here, her manager and security were here, it's definitely happening, so we are delighted that she's going to do it." Kylie Minogue, who is hoping to win in the Best International Female and Best International Album categories will be performing at the show. Sir Paul McCartney, who is to receive the Outstanding Contribution to Music Award, will also perform, as will Kaiser Chiefs, Mark Ronson, Mika and Rihanna.
