Mid of ASIMO leaving, camera pulls out of focus STORYLINE The Japanese manufacturer Honda unveiled the latest version of its ASIMO robot in Barcelona, Spain on Thursday. The popular robot, measuring 1.2 metres (3.9 feet) and weighing 43 kilos (6.7 stones), can walk, dance and run in an almost human-like way. ASIMO, or Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility, was created in the year 2000 by Honda. The idea behind Asimo was to create a robot that 'benefited humans in their daily lives'. The new version of ASIMO presented on Thursday "has improved its communication with humans," Honda Spain's Head of Communications David Yudes said. "Now it (ASIMO) is able to walk hand in hand with humans or push carts and carry trays and leave them on a table," Yudes said. As part of the demonstration, ASIMO carried a tray of drinks across the room and placed them carefully on a table. All its movements can be controlled from a mobile phone. The Barcelona presentation was part of a two-day workshop on robotics. Keyword-wacky

The robot is called ASIMO, which stands for Advanced Step in Innovative Mobility. ASIMO's height is just below 4 feet, which is significantly smaller than Honda's earlier humanoid robots. It's people friendly size enables it to actually perform tasks within the realm of a human living environment. One of ASIMO's main features is Honda's new "i-WALK" technology, which makes the robot achieve an unprecedented human-like ability to walk. As a result, the ASIMO robot walks smoothly and more naturally. The range of its arms has also been significantly increased and ASIMO can now be operated by a new portable controller for improved ease of operation. Hiroyuki Yoshino, President and Chief Executive Officer of Honda Motor Company Limited, said with the development of ASIMO, the company wants to create a partner for humans -- a new kind of robot that functions positively in society. Honda's basic research and development in humanoid robotics began in 1986 with the goal of developing an autonomous walking robot that can be helpful to humans. In 1996 Honda's prototype robot P-2 was introduced followed by the more advanced P-3 in 1997. SOUNDBITE: (Japanese) "This robot is really close to becoming like a human being.
