Tilt down from balloon to child, pan to people in crowd waving STORYLINE: A festive mood prevailed on Thursday as the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade made its way through the crowded streets of Manhattan beneath brilliant sunshine. The US Department store Macy's predicted 3.5 (m) million people could crowd the parade route, while an additional 50 (m) million watched from home. A jetpack-wearing monkey and a freakish creation from filmmaker Tim Burton are two of the big new balloons that were making their inaugural appearances. Paul Frank's Julius and Burton's B. joined more than a dozen other giant balloons, including fan favourites like Snoopy and Spider-Man. Steven Isaacson and daughter Sydney both decided that the Buzz Lightyear balloon was their favourite this year. In all, the parade featured more than 40 balloon creations, 27 floats, 800 clowns and 1,600 cheerleaders. While Leah Lichstein was happy to see the Diary of a Wimpy Kid character, she was also "thankful for just being with my family and my friends this Thanksgiving." The star power included Mary J. Blige, Cee Lo Green, Avril Lavigne and the Muppets of Sesame Street. Some performances were at a stage at the end of the route in Herald Square; others were on floats. Dozens of handlers got revved up with a cheer heralding their cartoon balloon character: "Buzz! Lightyear! Buzz! Lightyear!" The parade begins at 77th Street and heads south on Central Park West to Seventh Avenue, before moving to Sixth Avenue and ending at Macy's Herald Square. The parade got its start in 1924 and included live animals such as camels, goats and elephants. It was not until 1927 that the live animals were replaced by giant helium balloons. The parade was suspended from 1942 to 1944 because rubber and helium were needed for World War II. Since the beginning, the balloons have been based on popular cultural characters and holiday themes. Returning favourites this year include Buzz Lightyear, Clumsy Smurf, SpongeBob SquarePants and Kermit the Frog. All the balloons are created at Macy's Parade Studio, and each undergoes testing for flight patterns, aerodynamics, buoyancy and lift. Various exteriors of Nancy Crick's house STORYLINE: A frail cancer-stricken grandmother, whose appeals to die at a time of her choosing rekindled Australian debate on mercy killing, has committed suicide, according to supporters. Nancy Crick, 70, died peacefully on Wednesday at her home in Queensland, Australia, pro-euthanasia campaigner Dr Philip Nitschke said. Nitschke, who wasn't present when Crick died but saw her on Wednesday, said she took a fatal dose of drugs followed by a glass of liquor and a cigarette. She was suffering from bowel cancer. Nitschke described her as a martyr for the euthanasia cause. About 20 friends and family members were present when she died and they all could be charged with assisting her suicide - an offense that carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. Crick became a prominent right-to-die campaigner earlier this year when she began an internet diary chronicling her pain-wracked life and desire to die. In her last entry, dated May 17, she reiterated her wish in an open letter to a government minister. Police began their investigation into Crick's death on Thursday by sending scientific squad officers to her home on Queensland's Gold Coast. The police wouldn't say whether charges were likely to be laid, but said it would be a "long and protracted investigation." Australia's Northern Territory province legalised mercy killing in 1995 and Nitschke carried out euthanasia on four patients before Prime Minister John Howard's conservative federal government overturned the provincial legislation later that year. Since then, both the Netherlands and Belgium have legalised euthanasia under strict conditions.

Entertainment Europe: Natalie Imbruglia - Interview with singer as she launches latest single
TAPE: EF02/0630 IN_TIME: 14:25:13 DURATION: 3:37 SOURCES: APTN/BMG RESTRICTIONS: music video/performance rights must be cleared DATELINE: London. July 2002 SHOTLIST 1. And it is kind of a cleansing song. That is what the 'Beauty On The Fire' is about, it is like throwing. It is very out there. It is about throwing negative things on a big fire and getting rid of them and cleansing. It is quite abstract." 3. Music clip - 'Beauty on the Fire' 4. SOT (English) Natalie Imbruglia: "I'm an entertainer so anything involved in entertaining, I love singing, songwriting, acting, this whole new modelling thing, I haven't really wrapped my head around it being modelling but it is isn't it really. I don't think I'll be branching out too much in the modelling department. But I am really behind the product and I think L'Oreal is great." 5. SOT (English) Natalie Imbruglia: "Also L'Oreal buys me freedom to be able to choose projects that I really want to do that might not be as lucrative. If you want to do some art project more low key, you can afford to do that so it is a good thing." 7. Music clip - 'Beauty on the Fire' 8. SOT (English) Natalie Imbruglia: "Getting the second album out of my system was really important and so I wanted to stay focused on that so I didn't read any scripts and I just wanted it to be 100 percent focused on the music. Now that I have got that out of the way and I really believe that my second album is going to be my hardest album that I will ever make. People say the third album is but I think for me it was going to be the second one and so I think I felt ready to juggle the two careers which I always intended doing. I felt like I can handle it recently." 9. Music clip - 'Beauty on Fire' NATALIE IMBRUGLIA HAS EYE ON CHART Australian star NATALIE IMBRUGLIA is hoping for a good entry position in the UK singles charts this weekend, with her latest release 'Beauty On The Fire.' The soap star turned grunge popster (and now L'Oreal model) says the new song is about putting life in order. "It is actually about wanting things that you can't have, or attracting things or people that aren't good for you. And it is kind of a cleansing song. That is what the 'Beauty On The Fire' is about, it is like throwing. It is very out there. It is about throwing negative things on a big fire and getting rid of them and cleansing. It is quite abstract." The singer recently proved 'she's worth it' by signing a massive £100,000 deal with cosmetics giant L'Oreal. Following in the footsteps of other beauties who include Catherine Deneuve, Gong Li, Andie MacDowell, and Jennifer Aniston, Imbruglia is one of the first music stars to be signed up for this prestigious role. Her major role for the company will be appearing in international TV and magazine advertisements during the summer. Imbruglia originally made her name as an Australian actress in the internationally sold soap opera 'Neighbours', in which she played teenager Beth Brennan. After disappearing from the spotlight for a few years, she burst onto the international scene with the smash hit single 'Torn', taken from the acclaimed album 'Left of the Middle.' More recently, she released her follow-up album 'White Lillies Island,' which has not been as embraced as well as her debut. Imbruglia is happy with her efforts though - but admits her second album is likely to become the hardest album of her music career. Now that it is finished, she is ready to juggle acting and music again. She is currently filming the spy comedy 'Johnny English' alongside John Malkovich and Rowan Atkinson. Atkinson stars as an accident prone secret agent on a mission to rescue Britain's crown jewels and save the monarchy from a French business tyrant. Imbruglia will be making her big screen debut as special agent Lorna Campbell, the object of English's affection, while double Oscar nominee Malkovich plays sidekick Bough. The movie, from Working Title - the company behind 'Bridget Jones's Diary' and 'Notting Hill' is due out in spring 2003. Clip 'Shrek' STORYLINE: WILL IT BE UNLUCKY 13 FOR LORD OF THE RINGS? Australian, British and African-American talent took the lion's share of this year's Oscar nominations. 'A Beautiful Mind' and 'Moulin Rouge' clinched eight nominations each, including best acting nominations for 'Moulin Rouge's' Nicole Kidman and her Australian compatriot Russell Crowe in 'A Beautiful Mind' along with his supporting-star Jennifer Connelly. The film with the most nominations often wins Best Picture come Oscar night. But many of the 13 nominations for 'Lord of the Rings' were for technical achievements such as visual effects, sound, costume design and editing. A sprawling fantasy adventure has never won top Oscar honours, so 'Lord of the Rings' could come away with the most trophies while missing out on Best Picture. 'A Beautiful Mind' and 'Moulin Rouge' were joined in the Best Picture group by the British period whodunnit 'Gosford Park' and the dark drama 'In the Bedroom.' Nominees in the category for Best Actor in a movie were Russell Crowe for Sean Penn in 'I Am Sam,' Will Smith for 'Ali,' Denzel Washington for 'Training Day' and Tom Wilkinson for 'In the Bedroom.' The nominations for Best Actress went to Halle Berry for 'Monster's Ball,' Judi Dench in 'Iris,' Nicole Kidman in 'Moulin Rouge,' Sissy Spacek in 'In the Bedroom' and Renee Zellweger for 'Bridget Jones's Diary.' Dame Judi Dench and Tom Wilkinson led British hopes today as they were nominated for top acting honours in this year's Oscars. But there was also a Brit bonanza with three in each of the supporting categories, including Kate Winslet who is up for her third prize for her performance in 'Iris.' Best Actress nominee Dame Judi, 67, who is also up for 'Iris,' has now been short listed for the Oscars for four of the past five years. Dench was one of three among the ten nominees for Best Actor or Actress - along with Russell Crowe in 'A Beautiful Mind' and Sean Penn in 'I Am Sam' - whose character is afflicted by some form of mental health problem. Wilkinson, 53, lauded for his performance in 'In The Bedroom,' is listed for Best Actor and has never before been nominated for an Oscar. British nominees for best supporting actress alongside Winslet, 26, are Dame Maggie Smith, 67, and Helen Mirren, 56, who are both honoured for their roles in 'Gosford Park.' Blighty's supporting actor hopes are recently knighted Sir Ben Kingsley, 58, for his role in 'Sexy Beast,' Jim Broadbent, 52, for 'Iris', and Sir Ian McKellen, 62, for the fantasy epic 'Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Ring.' It was also the first time the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences - criticised in some quarters in recent years for the absence of African-American faces among the nominees - nominated two black actors for the Best Actor award - as well as Halle Berry getting the Best Actress nod. Washington has received four Oscar nominations previously and won a supporting-actor Oscar for 'Glory.' Another best actress nominee was Renee Zellweger, playing a Londoner haplessly seeking romance in "Bridget Jones's Diary. With Zellweger it was a rare instance where the academy singled out a comic performance. Nominated in the academy's new animated feature category were 'Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius,' and the deadly rivals 'Monsters, Inc.' (from Disney's Pixar Films) and DreamWorks' hot favourite 'Shrek.' Potential front-runners to win the foreign language film Oscar are the French romance 'Amelie,' which won Best Film at this year's European Film Awards, and the Bosnian war film 'No Man's Land.' The other foreign language nominees are 'Elling,' from Norway; 'Lagaan,' from India; and 'Son of the Bride,' from Argentina. Nominees in most categories were chosen by specific branches of the 5,700-member Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, such as actors, directors and writers. All academy members were allowed to vote for best-picture nominees. The full academy also is eligible to vote in all categories for the awards themselves. ABC will broadcast the Oscar ceremony on March 24 live from the show's new Hollywood home at the Kodak Theatre, just a block away from the Roosevelt Hotel, where the first Academy Awards were handed out in 1929. Whoopi Goldberg returns as host, her first time as master of ceremonies since 1998. This year's 74th Annual Academy Awards will be televised live around the world on March 24 from Hollywood. SOUNDBITE (English) Romola Garai: "I was in quite a lucky position of already feeling quite close to her. It's impossible not to read the book and feel like you know her very intimately. Dodie Smith draws so accurately the person that she is that there aren't any blank gaps that you are filling, you know Cassandra in and out by the time that you have read the book and the script as well." Momentum Pictures 3. Film clip - 'I Capture the Castle' APTN - 26th November 2002, London 4. SOUNDBITE (English) Romola Garai: "I think it was about building relationships first with her sister Rose, they are very close but Rose is the gregarious, beautiful one. Cassandra falls in to the shadow of that. Her relationship with her father is really important so I had the great opportunity of working with Bill Nighy to try and build the closeness and at the same time disappointment that she has in terms of the fact that he hasn't written another novel." Momentum Pictures 5. Film clip - 'I Capture the Castle' APTN - 26th November 2002, London 6. SOUNDBITE (English) Romola Garai: "The amazing thing about working on 'I Capture' was that I did a lot of my growing up making the film. So I was portraying this coming of age story and yet looking back on it I feel like I did a lot of my own growing up, analysing what happens to Cassandra. Because I was 17, turning 18 when I made the film so it was exactly the same time in my life." Momentum Pictures 7. Film clip 'I Capture the Castle' APTN - 26th November 2002, London 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Romola Garai: "On the one hand she is coming to terms with her sexuality and obviously Steven is this beautiful boy so she has feelings for him. Essentially she always knows that it is not love and love is the goal, love is the thing that you should be chasing which I suppose is what every young girl believes, it's the ideal." Momentum Pictures 9. Film clip - 'I Capture the Castle' APTN - 26th November 2002, London 10. SOUNDBITE (English) Romola Garai: "It's really important because she's tempted and she falls and she makes mistakes and she mess's up and she gets hurt and other people get hurt but in the end she sorts it out, she does the right thing and I think that demonstrates what a strong character and what a great character she is for young women especially to read about because she takes control." Momentum Pictures 11. Film clip- 'I Capture the Castle' COMING OF AGE ROMANCE British film newcomer Romola Garai takes on her first lead role in 1930s romantic comedy 'I Capture The Castle' as 17-year-old Cassandra Mortmain. The film is based on the Dodie Smith novel which was published in 1948, before she wrote '101 Dalmatians'. Romola felt that by reading the book she couldn't help but get inside the head of her character: "I was in quite a lucky position of already feeling quite close to her. It's impossible not to read the book and feel like you know her very intimately. Dodie Smith draws so accurately the person that she is that there aren't any blank gaps that you are filling, you know Cassandra in and out by the time that you have read the book and the script as well." The story follows the fortunes of her eccentric family, struggling to survive in a decaying English castle, through the pages of Cassandra's diary. Her father (Bill Nighy) is desperate to repeat the spectacular success of his first novel, but hasn't written a word for 12 years; her exquisite sister Rose (played by Australian actress Rose Byrne 'Star Wars: Episode II'), can only rail against their fate, and their Bohemian step-mother Topaz (Tara Fitzgerald) is a nudist and no help at all. Salvation comes in the form of their American landlord Simon Cotton, played by Henry Thomas ('Gangs of New York', 'Legends of the Fall'), and his brother Neil (Marc Blucas 'We Were Soldiers'). Although initially repelled by Simon, Rose is determined to make him fall in love with her and succeeds. A wedding is arranged and Cassandra is left on the sidelines as everyone around her is drawn into a maelstrom of interconnected relationships. But events spiral out of control, and before the summer ends she will experience frustrated desire, first love, and a broken heart. Actress Romola felt that, like her character she matured a lot whilst making the movie: "The amazing thing about working on 'I Capture' was that I did a lot of my growing up making the film. So I was portraying this coming of age story and yet looking back on it I feel like I did a lot of my own growing up, analysing what happens to Cassandra. Because I was 17, turning 18 when I made the film so it was exactly the same time in my life." She also believes that despite all her mistakes Cassandra is a strong character and a great role model for young women. 'I Capture The Castle' is directed by Tim Fywell, who makes his feature film debut, and is released in the UK today (09MAY). CLEARANCE DETAILS I Capture The Castle Momentum Pictures 020 7388 1100

Young, energetic and all of that, fresh, and there should be at least one group in the world that doesn''t reunite." VNR 15. Performance - ''Mamma Mia!'' MONEY, MONEY, MONEY - ABBA 30 YEARS ON Thirty years after the Swedish supergroup ABBA mounted the world''s stage at the 1974 Eurovison Song Contest, the band still remain one of the most popular pop acts ever. One of its four stars,Bjorn Ulvaeus, recalls being in considerable discomfort due to the demanding 70s fashion, the day their hit ''Waterloo'' launched them on the road to fame. "I still to this day remember the bus taking us to the hotel to the arena and my outfit, I was slightly overweight, an my outfit was so tight that I actually couldn''t sit down in the bus. I couldn''t sit down the whole time, the trousers would have split. When I came to the arena I was so concentrated the things around me was in a haze," said Ulvaeus, who wrote many of the classic hits with Benny Benny Andersson. ABBA split over 20 years ago but their hits lives on in the form of the massively popular musical ''Mamma Mia!'' which opened in London on April 6, 1999. It also has become an international phenomenon. Originally, planed as just a ''filler'' show before a glitzy production form Broadway arrived in London, '' Mamma Mia'' now celebrates its fifth anniversary, with 11 productions playing around the world and six more due to open in the next 18 months. Currently generating more than $8 million a week in ticket sales, ''Mamma Mia!'' has grossed more than $750 million worldwide, including $200 million on the West End and $150 million in New York. If the current box office activity continues, the show should easily pass the billion-dollar mark set by ''The Phantom of the Opera.'' Still, solid business is one thing; stratospheric is another. "Mamma Mia!" has yet to open in a city or country where it hasn''t clicked: Korea, the Netherlands, Australia and other countries. The show claims to have been seen by almost one in every 10 Australians. Why, then, does ''Mamma Mia!'' work? Scriptwriter Catherine Johnson, who has become a millionaire form the show, shaped the narrative on which to hang such clap-happy songs as ''Money, Money, Money,'' ''Dancing Queen'' and the title number. Her solution was to create a family drama about 20-year-old Sophie, who invites to her island wedding three men, determined to discover which one washer father. Her sleuthing prompts various showdowns, including an emotional reckoning with the hard-living mother, Donna, who raised Sophie on her own. "With this people seem to love is the story, relate to the characters, they come in here have a really good time. People who have been in the cast of Mamma Mia! say that there''s nothing like it - listening to that sort of audience reaction. I''ve stood out back and heard the audience reaction and just thought: ''My god it''s like being at a football stadium,'' or something like that. People come on coach trips and things like that.. It''s just fun, a fun thing to do," said Johnson. ABBA remain a phenomenon 30 years after ''Waterloo'' turned them into household names. They have sold an astonishing 350 million records worldwide and still shift 13,000 copies a day. In Britain they enjoyed nine number ones between 1974 and 1980 including Dancing Queen, Super Trouper, Winner Takes It All and Mamma Mia. But Ulvaeus has said that the musical has made him "richer than ABBA ever did." Despite the money-making potential, ABBA are adamant they will never reform and reportedly turned down an offer of a billion dollars. Ulvaeus said: "Sincerely we just think it should just be as it is. People should remember us as we were back then. Young, energetic and all of that, fresh, and there should be at least one group in the world that doesn''t reunite."
