BAKKEN MUSEUM FEATURE (2020)
From Apple to Amazon, many great companies started in a garage. That includes the Minnesota medical device company Medtronic. In 1949, Earl Bakken co-founded Medtronic and later developed the first wearable, battery-operated external heart pacemaker. The Bakken Museum opened in 1975 by Bde Maka Ska in Minneapolis. The museum explores science, technology and the humanities, highlighting the inspiration and innovation of Bakken's life story. "He was a kid who liked to tinker, liked the idea of electricity and he was really interested in how electricity was fundamental to life," Museum CEO Michael Sanders said. Bakken died in 2018, but his legacy lives on in the Bakken Museum.

"We, as a law enforcement family, will do everything possible to continue to provide support and comfort to her family. We will miss her infectious smile and personality. She will be missed by all she touched."
\n

\n
kaitie-leising.jpg
\n
Deputy Kaitie Leising
\n
ST. CROIX COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE/CBS NEWS
\n
The shooting occurred in the township of Glenwood, about an hour east of the Twin Cities, around 6:15 p.m.
\n

\n
The Wisconsin Department of Justice said Leising encountered a potentially impaired driver, 34-year-old Jeremiah Johnson, in a ditch, along with a car that had stopped to help him. Leising asked Johnson to take field sobriety tests, and after evading her request for eight minutes, Johnson shot her, the DOJ said.
\n

\n
Leising shot back three times, but did not hit Johnson, according to the DOJ. The people at the scene tried to save Leising's life, but she was later pronounced dead at a hospital.
\n

\n
RELATED: Local law enforcement agencies offer condolences for Deputy Kaitie Leising
\n

\n
Johnson fled into the woods, according to the DOJ. About an hour after Leising was shot, another officer saw Johnson, "heard a gunshot, and witnessed him collapse to the ground," the DOJ said. A handgun was found by Johnson, and no law enforcement officers fired their weapons at that time.
\n

\n
The sheriff's office said Leising joined St. Croix County in 2022, and was with the Pennington County Sheriff's Office in South Dakota for two years before that.
\n

\n

\n
Robert Unruh, mayor of nearby Glenwood City, said his "thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the fallen officer, the St. Croix County Sheriff's Office and all law enforcement."
\n

\n
"Our community was abruptly disturbed and exposed to an incident that greatly affected everyone in many ways and will continue to do so in the foreseeable future," Unruh said.
\n

\n
Hundreds of people in Minnesota and Wisconsin joined law enforcement from both states Sunday in escorting the sheriff's deputy. Draped in the American flag, Leising's body was brought into a funeral home in Baldwin, Wisconsin surrounded by dozens of law enforcement officers in solemn salute.
\n

\n
READ MORE: Widow of slain Pope Co. Deputy Josh Owen: "Losing Josh will never go away"
\n

\n
She was never alone on her trip from St. Paul to Baldwin. Hundreds of people lined the streets and bridges to follow the police procession.
\n

\n
You didn't have to know Leising personally to feel compelled to honor her life and her service to St. Croix County.
\n

\n
"I'm so thankful that there are so many people here," said Hudson resident Shelly Vance. "We rallied last minute."
\n

\n
A crowd of people from all over gathered on the 11th Street Bridge over I-94 on Sunday afternoon, as Deputy Leising's body was brought from the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office to the funeral home.
\n

\n
A squad car marks a memorial for her in front of the St. Croix Sheriff's Office, as people have come by to lay flowers and pay their respects, including Hudson residents Chad and Laura Johnson.
\n

\n
"It's just senseless, just very sad," Laura Johnson said.
\n

\n

\n
"Thought we'd bring our grandkids down here to support a little bit as we could do," Chad Johnson said. "You feel for the family members that had a daughter that didn't come home last night."
\n

\n
A few of the deputies who just lost their colleague lowered their flags to half staff. Marcia Krogseng can't believe another law enforcement officer's life was cut short.
\n

\n
"My son is a police officer. I got other family who are in the police force across the two states, and I just wanted to show my respects for the officer who was lost yesterday," Krogseng said. "Three in Wisconsin, one in Minnesota within the last month. I just hope it's not a trend."
\n

\n
Becky Brock felt it was important to bring her daughters to see the procession.
\n

\n
"I'm sick to my stomach, actually. I am disgusted with the fact that all of these officers from all of these different departments just did this three weeks ago," Brock said. "We can be supportive of the police department, of the firefighters, of the helpers, is what we call them in our house. Look for the helpers, and all of these helpers are being supportive of each other, and we're supportive of them."
\n

\n
This community, like the others in the last month, have all shown their strength in numbers through difficult times.
\n

\n
"We need them to come together, and we all come together. That's just great to see that in our community," said Hudson resident Krista Borst.
\n

\n
Last month, officers Hunter Scheel of Cameron and Emily Breidenbach of Chetek were killed in a shootout after serving a warrant at a traffic stop.
\n

\n
A week after that, Pope County, Minnesota Sheriff's Deputy Joshua Owen was killed in a shootout. TX: DESANTIS UNVEILS ENERGY PLAN

POLITICAL DeSantis unveils energy agenda from Texas oil country
\n

\n
By Steve Contorno and Kit Maher
\n

\n
Flanked by two oil rigs in West Texas, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis shared his vision for America’s energy sector on Wednesday, with an emphasis on unraveling President Joe Biden’s ongoing efforts to fight climate change.
\n

\n
DeSantis said he would withdraw the United States from global climate change pacts and end all commitments for the country to cut net greenhouse emissions to zero, while greenlighting more pipelines and allow mining and extraction of oil, gas, coal, uranium and other minerals on federal lands.
\n

\n
“Climate change ideology” will be replaced with “energy dominance in all national security and foreign policy guidance,” his plan says. He would also “revitalize our nuclear energy industry.”
\n

\n
Through these measures, DeSantis says he can lower gas prices to $2 a gallon by 2025, a lofty goal that would be tested by international complexities that typically drive oil prices. Average gas prices have consistently stayed above $2 dating back to President George W. Bush’s second term, though it has dipped below that mark for brief periods under Presidents Barack Obama and Trump, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
\n

\n
“We will unleash American energy dominance as a way to stop inflation and achieve $2 gas in 2025. We need a pro-America energy policy that puts Midland over Moscow, the Marcellus over the Mullahs, and the Bakken over Beijing,” DeSantis said in Midland, Texas.
\n

\n
Gas prices have fluctuated consistently under Biden, at times reaching record highs and driving troubling inflation. Biden has tapped into the country’s strategic petroleum reserves to help alleviate prices at the pump. The reserve held 350.6 million barrels of oil as of the week ending September 8, down nearly 300 million barrels since he began office. DeSantis said he would refill the reserves and limit future use to emergencies.
\n

\n
Biden’s priorities would be put on notice under a DeSantis presidency. DeSantis would roll back subsidies for electric vehicles and “support Americans’ right to drive the cars they want.” The Biden administration earlier this year proposed new car pollution rules that could lead to electric vehicles accounting for two-thirds of new car sales by 2032.
\n

\n
Much of Biden’s push toward electric vehicles has come through the Inflation Reduction Act, which included a nearly $370 billion clean energy and climate package, the largest climate investment in US history. has invested billions into electric vehicle manufacturing through the act, which also includes tax credits for people The Biden administration has invested billions into electric vehicle manufacturing through the act, which also includes tax credits for people to purchase battery-powered cars.
\n

\n
DeSantis said he would withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement, a move first initiated under President Donald Trump but then reversed by Biden on the same day he took the oath of office. DeSantis would also nix the Global Methane Pledge, a joint goal for reducing methane emissions reached last November by the Biden administration and the European Union.
\n

\n
And DeSantis would federalize a priority of his in Florida: banning government pension funds from considering factors like environmental, social and governance when making investment decisions.
\n

\n
While DeSantis on the campaign trail has often pushed for more fossil fuel production across the country, in Florida, he has fought to put guardrails on energy companies to protect his state’s environment.
\n

\n
DeSantis on his second day as governor in 2019 signed an executive order that directed the state’s Department of Environmental Protection to “oppose all off-shore oil and gas activities off every coast in Florida and hydraulic fracturing in Florida.” He threatened he would "be raising Cain” if then-President Donald Trump opened Florida’s coastal waters to drilling, warning that an oil spill there would have a “cascading effect” on his state’s economy. In 2020, his administration purchased 20,000 acres of Everglades wetlands to permanently protect them from oil drilling.
\n
“I will continue to fight every day for the Everglades and Florida’s environment,” he said at the time.
\n
DeSantis, though, seemed to distance himself from his environmental streak earlier this year, telling reporters that “people have kind of misconstrued” what he has done in Florida and attributing his anti-drilling position to Floridians who enshrined such protections in the state constitution.
\n

\n
“That’s something that we honor. That is not saying that I think that should apply to Louisiana or Texas and all that, so that will continue,” he said at a campaign event in New Hampshire. “We’re a coastal state, we’ve had oil spills. We’ve put that in the constitution, our voters did, and that’s something as governor that I followed and respected.”
\n

\n
DeSantis has consistently faced questions from Iowans about his energy record, particularly his past opposition to ethanol subsidies. As a congressman in 2017, DeSantis co-sponsored a bill to eliminate the federal renewable fuel standard, which mandates the blending of biofuels -- most often corn-based ethanol -- into US transportation fuel. Iowa is the country’s leading producer of corn, more than half of which is used to make ethanol for fuel.
\n

\n
DeSantis recently wrote an op-ed in an Iowa newspaper that did not acknowledge his sponsorship of the 2017 bill but said that, as president, his administration would “also support giving drivers additional low-cost options at the pump, including higher ethanol blends such as E30 and higher octane options, and ensure that America’s fuel economy is driven by moms in Marion, not bureaucrats in Washington.”
\n

\n
Trump has seized on DeSantis’ past efforts to end the renewable fuel standard as he seeks to drive a wedge between the Florida governor and Republican caucusgoers in Iowa. At the Iowa State Fair this summer, Trump’s campaign handed out flyers highlighting DeSantis’ past position on ethanol and claiming that the governor has been “fighting for years to kill every single job supported by this vital industry.”
\n

\n
DeSantis campaign spokesman Bryan Griffin previously dismissed those attacks as “further evidence of (Trump’s) eroding support in Iowa.”
\n
“Iowans increasingly know that Governor DeSantis is the presidential candidate who shares their values,” Griffin said.
\n

\n
But DeSantis has largely dodged questions from Iowans about ethanol, promising he would have more to say when he introduced his energy agenda.
\n
Ethanol, DeSantis said in August, "will be a part of our energy policy, because it's American made energy that's produced, that supports American jobs."
\n

\n
--SUPERS--
\n
Wednesday
\n
Midland, TX
\n

\n
--VIDEO SHOWS--
\n

\n
--LEAD IN--
\n

\n
--VO SCRIPT--
\n

\n
--SOT--
\n

\n
--TAG--
\n

\n
--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--
\n

\n
-----END-----CNN.SCRIPT-----
\n

\n
--KEYWORD TAGS--
\n

\n
--MUSIC INFO---
\n
