Wide of sheriff truck driving away STORYLINE: Searchers found the body of a US hot-air balloon pilot who ordered five skydivers to jump before his balloon plummeted and crashed during a weekend thunderstorm, a sheriff said on Monday. A helicopter spotted the balloon, and searchers on the ground then found the body of 63-year-old Edward Ristaino in south Georgia, Ben Hill County Sheriff Bobby McLemore said. The balloon was found draped over the basket containing the body in a heavily wooded area, the sheriff said. A fast-developing thunderstorm sucked in Ristaino's balloon while he was ferrying skydivers on Friday, then sent the craft plummeting towards the ground. As the storm that seemed to come out of nowhere closed in, Ristaino spotted an open field 4-thousand feet (1,219 metres) below and calmly and tersely warned the five skydivers aboard the craft: "You need to get out now." The skydivers parachuted to safety - but the balloon was sucked up into the clouds, then sent crashing to earth. The group had taken off on Friday evening, ascending into a blue sky from a festival in Fitzgerald, Georgia. From the air, they could see only a haze that soon turned menacing. Skydiver Jessica Wesnofske, speaking before Ristaino's body was found, said she didn't comprehend how bad the storm had become until the winds whipped and rocked her parachute on the way down. "He said a couple of times, he's like 'You know, you guys are lucky, you're getting out'," she told the Associated Press. "We thought for sure he would probably just land it down, but there weren't many landing options for him either by the time he got to where we did," she added. Her father Brian said he didn't hear any urgency in Ristaino's voice "until maybe just the last point when they radioed back up and said 'it looks like it's turning into a storm, get your jumpers out and get down'." According to McLemore, an updraft took Ristaino up to about 17,000-18,000 feet (5,181-5,486 metres) - at which point "the hot air balloon collapsed and started and twisting its ropes up." In his last transmission via walkie-talkie, he reported that he was at 2-thousand feet (609 metres) and saw trees beneath him, according to the sheriff. According to Jessica Wesnofske, Ristaino had been part of the skydiving community for a long time and a ballooner for decades. Its sensitivity is due to the immense strain in the molecule, in which three large iodine atoms are bound to a small nitrogen. (1:29) / 00:00:00:15 i never heard a sound like that in my life. i actually witnessed a 23-car pile-up on this bridge at one time that was nothing compared to this sound. &gt;&gt; (ROBERTS) what was the sound like? &gt;&gt; it's like -- ascaffolding falling down, a weird sound. i said -- i never heard that. i jumped up to look. &gt;&gt; (ROBERTS) you ran to the window. what did you see? &gt;&gt; CLARK) 07:13:50 the whole bridge is in the water. it's down. i thought that can't be, but it was. everything was down. when i saw it, part of the bridge was still above water. the north end actually went under water after about, i don't know, a few minutes. when i saw it, it was still above the water. then i saw people getting out of cars, the few cars that were down there. i saw these little white balloons. i thought what is going on here. i couldn't figure out. there were white things floating around, people staggering around cars. they were stunned. but everything was in slow motion. 07:14:28 incredible. the white balloons turned out to be -- &gt;&gt; i assume were the air bags coming out of these cars, because every air bag had to go off when they fell 65 feet. everything was in slow motion. then people were just sort of looking aroundi'm thinking should i run down there? go, go, go! but it took a while for people to come to.
