This is the tenth year the "blocao", which roughly translates as 'block party', leaves its pawmarks on the pavements of one of Rio's most famous neighbourhoods. Costumes ranged from princesses to super heroes. Parade organiser Marco Antonio Toto, wearing a baseball cap with floppy dog ears, who owns a local pet shop and insists there are more dogs per square yard (metre) in Copacabana than anywhere else on earth, says the dogs deserve their day. For some participants it was an excuse to emulate their pets and dress up. Rio de Janeiro resident Eduardo Jonathan came dressed as Batman with his puppy Spike, who was "mini" Batman. "It is tons of fun for the dogs. They get to come out and see other dogs, it is lots of fun," he said. The Blocao is part of Rio de Janeiro's annual carnival celebrations, which begin officially next Friday when mayor Eduardo Paes hands the key to the city to the King Momo, traditionally a big, tall man, who presides over festivities.
