KIDD.
\n

\n

\n
The USS Kidd, one of the most storied destroyers from World War II, has been lifted out of the water in Houma, Louisiana, to begin a significant $11 million restoration.
\n

\n
Workers at Thoma-Sea Marine are tackling the first major overhaul of the vessel since 1962, focusing on hull repairs and a new camouflage paint job. The restoration will also include restoring crew quarters to honor African-American contributions during the war.
\n

\n
The USS Kidd, a 500-foot Fletcher-class destroyer capable of 40 miles per hour, played a crucial role in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters.
\n

\n
The ship endured a deadly kamikaze attack off Okinawa, where 38 crew members were killed and 55 wounded. Despite the heavy damage, the Kidd survived and earned 12 battle stars during the war.
\n

\n
For the past 42 years, the USS Kidd has been a prominent tourist attraction in Baton Rouge, resting in a cradle that caused significant hull damage. The vessel was moved to Houma three months ago for the restoration project, which is expected to last five more months.
\n

\n
What were finding is shes flooding more than she was in Baton Rouge. We knew the time to come it had to be this year. We needed to get her patched to fix the leaks, said Museum Director Parks Stephenson.
\n

\n
The project, funded by the state, involves 50 workers battling stifling heat, cutting and replacing steel sections of the ships hull.
\n

\n
Were cutting, replacing steel, and were painting it camo, which will be neat, said Bill Purvis, manager at Thoma-Sea Marine.
\n

\n
As part of the restoration, the ships quarters will be returned to their original configuration to highlight the contributions of African-American sailors during the war.
\n

\n
Were restoring quarters to the original configuration, so we can tell the story of African-Americans in World War II, Stephenson said.
\n

\n
Once the restoration is complete, the USS Kidd may make a stop in New Orleans next spring, where it will be open for public tours before returning to Baton Rouge.
\n

\n
Station Notes/Scripts:
\n
It's been three months since the US S Kidd was removed from its cradle in Baton Rouge and escorted down the Mississippi River to Houma where workers perform a painstaking restoration on a piece of World War I I history. They say it's America's greatest generation and it truly is the sleek 500 ft fletcher class destroyer was capable of going 40 miles an hour and saw extensive duty in the Atlantic and the Pacific where a Japanese kamikaze pilot killed 38 men and wounded 55 in an attack east of Okinawa. I am loving the care and attention that Thomas C shipyards is given to this ship. My whole staff has a personal investment in this ship and we all feel that the ship could not be in better hands. The kid has been perched in Baton Rouge for 42 years resting in a cradle that has damaged the hull. Workers at Thomas Sea Marine slowly brought her into a huge dry dock which lifts the kid out of the water as water is removed from huge dry dock tanks, an operation which took practically all day. We're cutting steel, replacing steel pain. It is gonna be painted to a World War Two configuration of camouflage paint, which I think will be pretty neat. Park Stevenson says as part of this retrofit, they will actually be reconfiguring some of the cabin space inside the kid to recognize the contribution of African Americans during World War two. And we are restoring those quarters to the original configuration and we're partnering with our local African American Museum in Baton Rouge to tell to develop the narrative so that we can tell the story of African Americans who served in the navy in World War. I I this project funded by the state is expected to take five more months as about 50 homer workers battle stifling heat to restore a part of naval history. The 1718 and 19 year old boys. So we're grown men who died on that ship who worked on this ship with its new camouflage paint job. The US S Kidd may stop off in New Orleans for a couple weeks this spring where it will be open for tours before it's taken back to Baton Rouge to continue as that city's top tourist destination from Houma, Ramas Fox eight local first.
\n

\n
--SUPERS--
\n

\n
--VIDEO SHOWS--
\n

\n
--VO SCRIPT--
\n

\n
--LEAD IN--
\n

\n
--SOT--
\n

\n
--TAG--
\n

\n
--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--
\n

\n
-----END-----CNN.SCRIPT-----
\n

\n
--KEYWORD TAGS--
\n

(WSIL) -- In northern Hamilton County only a few oil wells remain.
\n

\n
One in particular belongs to Busby Energy, a company that now has just one well to its name.
\n

\n
Clifford Benbrook, 97, has been working with Busby for nearly 50 years and now takes care of its last well.
\n

\n
"Let me show you some of the oil that it's making," Benbrook said as he took a piece of wood to uncrank a handle that unleashed somes gushes of precious oil.
\n

\n
Oil out of well faucet
\n
Benbrook's life is rooted in oil having worked on oil wells and oil fields since he was 15-years old. An 'old-school roughneck' is one way to describe him. Another is by his nickname: Strawberry.
\n

\n

\n
"I used to have pretty red hair when I was young," Benbrook recalled.
\n

\n
His hair isn't red anymore and it's not white either. But you won't find Benbrook feeling blue about it. There's no time to feel blue when your clock is still ticking.
\n

\n
"If I sat down and don't get out of that door I'm not going to be here long," Benbrook said. "I feel a lot better when I get out."
\n

\n
Benbrook's work ethic hasn't wavered even though his health has.
\n

\n
In the last year and a half Benbrook battled COVID-19, numerous skin cancers and bleeding from his small intestine. Not given much of a chance to live, the old Marine continued the battle and beat the odds.
\n

\n
"One of the nurses out there that sent me... she said 'I didn't expect to see you again'", Benbrook laughed.
\n

\n
Benbrook spent most of his life working in the oil industry with a brief exception during his later teen years when he enlisted to fight in World War II.
\n

\n
Enlisting in the U.S. Marines, Benbrook served as a corporal and saw combat at the Battle of Okinawa, the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific Theater. It was also one of the scariest times of his life.
\n

\n
"This boy he shot a kid right out in an old house," Benbrook recalled. "I asked 'Why did you do that?' he said 'I just wanted to kill somebody.'"
\n

\n
After the war, Benbrook bounced around working for different oil companies when he settled in Hamilton County in 1975 with Busby.
\n

\n
At his peak, Benbrook took care of more than 10 wells. These days it's just one. He makes sure to check for leaks and see that everything is still functional. One of Benbrook's sons helps him and drives him to the well.
\n

\n

\n
The Illinois Oil & Gas Association claims Benbrook to be the oldest living oil well worker in the state, the country and, quite possibly, the world.
\n

\n
The work he does isn't just for the paycheck it's also to keep himself going after the deaths of his oldest son and Norma, his wife of more than 70 years.
\n

\n
"She was in a nursing home for quite a while," Benbrook said. "I've been alone now two to three years."
\n

\n
But Benbrook is time-tested and has no plans of slowing down at age 97 or at anytime. He'll keep going until his own well runs dry.
\n

\n
"If you can, keep going. Just don't sit down and die that's what will happen to you," Benbrook said.
\n

\n
"Just don't sit down and quit."
\n

\n
Station Notes/Scripts:
\n

\n
ANCHOR INTRO
\n

\n
We meet a man whose been working in the oil fields for more than 80 years.
\n

\n
His name is Clifford Benbrook.
\n

\n
A veteran who's considered to be the OLDEST oil well worker in Illinois.
\n

\n
And maybe even the U.S.
\n

\n
That's according to the Illinois Oil and Gas Association.
\n

\n
I sat down with him to find out--- what drives him--- besides the oil.
\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n
(**TAKE PKG**)
\n

\n
(**TAKE NATS**)
\n

\n
Machine sounds
\n

\n

\n

\n
(**TAKE SOT**)
\n

\n
"Let me show you some of the oil that it's making"
\n

\n

\n

\n
(**TAKE NATS**)
\n

\n
Oil gushing out
\n

\n

\n

\n
His life is rooted in oil.
\n

\n
But he goes by the name--- Strawberry.
\n

\n

\n

\n

\n

\n
(**TAKE SOT**)
\n

\n
"I used to have pretty red hair when I was young."
\n

\n

\n

\n
It's no longer red.
\n

\n
But it's not white either.
\n

\n
And he has no time to feel blue.
\n

\n
While time is still ticking.
\n

\n

\n

\n
(**TAKE SOT**)
\n

\n
¤WA8 11904 Clifford Benbrook, oil worker for 80 years: "If I sat down and don't get out of that door.
