Various shots Valentino catwalk STORYLINE: VALENTINO GOES ON SAFARI Valentino took his audience on an elegant safari, the big Paris theme this season. Not more camouflage, groaned some in the audience. But it all turned out to be a nice homage to an Andy Warhol painting called Camouflage from 1986. It was just a backdrop, not an all-pervading style. There were jungle-desert flavours in the clothes, like a well-fitted taupe jacket with cream linen pants. Pretty safari jackets in sandy suede were paired with matching hot pants. Some sparkly hot pants would be much better in Saint Tropez than in the bush, though a few military jackets and classic cream suits with starry snaps on flaps and epaulettes could be worn to lunch at the Ritz. But from the military details evolved the familiar Valentino cocktail-lounge elegance and chic. Abstract graffiti prints and occasional multicoloured pave effects on pointillist style minis were right up there with crystal embroidery for the Valentino trademarks. They all invariably add up to glamour and good taste. There was an absence of the designer's celebrated ruffles, giving a more sporty clean feel to the collection. The show was about loosening up with soft jogging pants, pleated dresses and wafty chiffon.
