DRAGON BOAT FESTIVAL 2009
The Bewl Water Dragon Boat Festival is the largest event of its type in Europe and this year 100 teams competed over the weekend with an estimated 10,000 spectators watching. Bewl Water, Lamberhurst, near Tunbridge Wells, Kent is the largest lake in South East England and was the perfect backdrop for this growing fun raising event. Over the past eleven years just over a £1.5 million has been raised for a number of charities; many of them local to Kent and Sussex. Dragon boat racing originated in China over 2000 years ago, is now a modern International sport. Teams from Asia dominate this sport at the highest level. However, this weekend’s festival is all about fun and raising as much cash as possible for the competitors’ charities. With names such as “Synchronised sinkers”, “Mayfield Submariners” and “Dangerous when wet” it was never going be a serous affair although there were a few teams who were fiercely competitive and had been training for several weeks. All crews taking part have sixteen members plus a drummer or caller at the bow facing toward the paddlers and 1 sweep or tiller(helm) at the rear of the boat. The drummer is considered the "heartbeat" of the dragon boat team, and leads the crew throughout a race with the rhythmic beating of a drum to indicate the timing and frequency of paddling strokes. The course was 250 metres and most teams clocked in with modest times around 1.10 to 1.20. Each team has three races and the fastest 10 teams progressed to the final, where bragging rights and £ 450 was up for grabs.
