Non-violent bullfighting approved by Mexico City Chamber of Deputies amid ongoing protests
MEXICO CITY, MEXICO - MARCH 18: Non-violent bullfighting has been officially sanctioned following a decision by Mexico's Chamber of Deputies, introducing a new set of regulations aimed at reducing harm to the animals.
The new rules include a ban on sharp objects such as banderillos, lances and swords, which have traditionally been used in bullfighting.
The regulations also limit each bullfight to a maximum of 15 minutes, with no more than six bulls allowed per event.
Any injury or death to the animals is strictly forbidden, with fines of up to 339,000 pesos for the death of an animal.
As the debate unfolded, both pro- and anti-bullfighting groups gathered outside the Chamber of Deputies, where they were separated by a heavy police presence to prevent violence between the two sides.
