Tundra warming carbon release feedback loop, animation
Animation showing the positive feedback loop by which increased warming of tundra regions leads to increased carbon release into the atmosphere, driving further warming. Tundra occurs where the soil below the surface is permanently frozen. This means that no trees can grow, and the only vegetation is tough short shrubs. As this dies its decay is prevented by the freezing temperatures. As the climate warms, the upper layers of permafrost melt and the dead vegetation starts to decay, releasing large amounts of trapped carbon into the atmosphere. This carbon includes carbon dioxide and methane, both powerful greenhouse gases, which trap solar heat and drive further warming. This melts ever-deeper layers of permafrost, releasing even more carbon.
