The accident occurred around 10:30pm (1530gmt) Sunday night in Sag Harbor. Sag Harbor police say 54-year-old Joel lost control of his 2002 Mercedes Benz. He survived a 1982 motorcycle accident on Long Island and went on that year to record "The Nylon Curtain," which received a Grammy nomination for "Album of the Year." Joel was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.

They are also under suspicion of filing false reports on defective vehicle parts related to a fatal truck accident in Yokohama in 2002. The seven include Takashi Usami, 63, former chairman of Mitsubishi Fuso Truck & Bus Corp., who was vice president of Mitsubishi Motors at the time of the accident, and Akio Hanawa, 63, a former Mitsubishi Motors managing director. Earlier on Thursday, police raided the offices of Mitsubishi's truckmaking affiliate. Investigators with empty boxes arrived in two police vans, filing into the headquarters of Mitsubishi Fuso on Thursday morning. The seven are suspected of trying to shirk responsibility for an accident in which a 29-year-old woman was killed when she was hit by a wheel that came off a passing Mitsubishi truck after a hub connecting the wheel to the axle broke. The truckmaker blamed poor maintenance in a report to industry regulators even though executives were aware that there were defects in the hubs of some of its vehicles, Kyodo News quoted investigative sources as saying. Mitsubishi Fuso was spun off from Mitsubishi Motors in January 2003, and the seven executives reportedly under investigation worked for the Japanese automaker at the time of the accident in January 2002. Police were also preparing to seek criminal charges against Mitsubishi Motors for allegedly failing to implement adequate safety measures, according to local media reports. Authorities are investigating dozens of wheel-separation accidents involving Mitsubishi trucks dating back more than a decade. More than two years after the fatal accident, Mitsubishi Fuso announced in March plans to recall 220,000 trucks after acknowledging that a design flaw could cause the wheel hubs to crack. The Tokyo-based automaker, which is 37 percent owned by DaimlerChrylser AG, was shaken by a scandal four years ago when it admitted that it had concealed owner complaints from industry regulators to avoid having to order a recall.

The storm system crept into the state yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon near Charlotte and moved northeast toward Richmond, Virginia, through early today (Thursday). A light freezing rain falling in Raleigh to east of Interstate 95 before dawn turned back to snow later this morning (Thursday). The heaviest snow fell along a line from Anson and Richmond counties east of Charlotte to the Raleigh-Durham area and north to the Virginia border. The storm dumped 4 to 7 inches of snow along the trail. Up to a foot of snow was possible in areas of North Carolina's rural northeast corner before the storm wrapped up later Thursday, the weather service said. About 12,000 North Carolina customers were without power, the majority in the area around Whiteville in Columbus County, where about 9,000 customers had no power, CP&L spokesman Garrick Francis said. Duke Power spokesman Tom Williams said the utility had "virtually no storm related outages" in its service area from Chapel Hill west to the mountains. The snow caused traffic accidents and canceled classes for school districts from the foothills of the state's Appalachian Mountains to the coastal plain. In Anson County east of Charlotte, James William Morris of Cheraw, S.C., died after he was hit by a tractor-trailer Wednesday evening on U.S. 52. Morris had stopped to help a motorist stranded due to the storm and was walking on the side of the highway near the town of McFarlan. U.S. 64 east of Raleigh turned treacherous Wednesday night at a steep dip and incline for a bridge across the Neuse River, said Martin Chriscoe, the emergency management director for Wake County. Two tractor-trailers collided around 2 a.m. Thursday, blocking the road for about two hours and snarling traffic until just before dawn, Clendenin said. The highway patrol reported mostly minor collisions in the 12 counties around Raleigh. Traffic was slowed but continuing to pass on Interstate 85 in Warren County, and on Interstate 95 passes in Halifax County, both of which saw about 6 inches of snow, county emergency officials said. While police warned roads across nearly all of North Carolina's midsection were slippery and dangerous this morning, the state's three major airports were open. Airports in Raleigh-Durham, Charlotte and Greensboro were clear for takeoffs and landings, though flights to and from Atlanta were facing delays and cancellations. Now, many of them are just trying to negotiate icy roads. Up to four inches of snow fell across much of the state through midnight, and more snow fell this morning (Thursday 1/3/02). Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport, the world's busiest, opened 12 special de-icing pads for planes. Delta Air Lines cancelled 300 flights and expected to cancel 30 to 40 more today. Some arriving planes waited two hours to get to a gate while departing aircraft queued up to be de-iced. Sleet and freezing rain fell south of the snow band. Driving conditions are treacherous, worsened by a hard freeze overnight. Two deaths were blamed on icy roads in Aiken County, South Carolina, near Augusta. Georgia transportation officials deployed long-dormant snow trucks, spreading fine gravel and salt on major roads to prevent accidents. Spokeswoman Karlene Barron said bridges in the central part of the state were especially dangerous. All state offices in counties affected by the snowy weather in Georgia are closed. The state is experiencing the heaviest snowfall in 10 years. State offices were ordered closed this morning because rural roads in many areas were causing travel problems. Georgia transportation officials deployed long-dormant snow trucks, spreading fine gravel and salt on major roads to prevent accidents. The counties affected are generally in the middle Georgia area northward to the Atlanta area. Snow is continuing to fall in the state. although by 9 a-m the snow had finally stopped falling in the Atlanta area. The Weather Service says lows tonight (Thursday 1/3/02) will be in the 20s and upper teens so whatever is on the ground will freeze. Tomorrow (Friday), plenty of sunshine is expected to push temperatures well above freezing by midday. Lows tomorrow night are expected to be in the 20s again.
