Marciel Basanta Lopez and Luis Grass Rodriguez, the two men who turned the classic car into a floating vessel, tried a similar stunt last year and were caught. On that occasion, they set out for Florida in a 1951 Chevrolet pickup with pontoons made out of empty oil drums and a propeller that pushed it along at about eight miles per hour (13 kilometres per hour). On Monday, the men set out again, with four other adults and five children, relatives said. According to one exile activist the coast guard intercepted the group en route to the Florida Keys, picking them up about 10 miles (16 kilometres) off Marathon, which is about 90 miles (145 kilometres) southwest of Miami. The activist said the US coast guard sank the Buick. The coast guard refused to confirm the floating car's status, but it used machine gun fire to sink the first vehicle-powered boat. One of the men, who was among those on the earlier attempt to reach the United States, said the Buick's doors had been sealed to keep water out and it was powered by its original V-8 motor. Under US immigration policy, Cubans who reach American shores are generally allowed to stay, while those caught at sea are usually returned. Immigration officials interview Cubans intercepted at sea to determine if they have a credible fear of persecution at home, but most are still returned.

Top shot neighbours outside Basanta's home STORYLINE: A family of four intercepted at sea as they tried to make their way to Florida in a floating 1959 Buick car returned home on Wednesday to the jubilant welcome of worried relatives and several hundred neighbours. Earlier in the day, Cuban police inspected a house and several auto repair shops in the neighborhood where the refugees had converted the Buick and a 1951 Chevy pickup truck used in an earlier journey into seaworthy vessels. They did not seize any vehicles, however. "We feel good. They treated us as well as could be expected," said Marcial Basanta as he hugged and kissed the friends and family who gathered for his return to Havana's Diezmero neighbourhood. Basanta, his wife and two children were among 11 Cubans picked up last week by the US Coast Guard after a patrol plane spotted them chugging through waters in the tailfinned car-turned-boat off of Key West, Florida. US authorities returned eight of the refugees to the communist island on Tuesday and Cuban authorities released the would-be asylum seekers on Wednesday. The three others, Luis Grass Rodriguez, his wife and their 4-year-old son, Angel, received a reprieve from the Bush administration on Wednesday and will be sent to the US Navy base at Guantanamo, Cuba. The Department of Homeland Security decided the family has a credible fear of persecution if they are sent home and plans "a detailed examination," US officials said. Both Marcial Basanta and the Grass family had attempted the journey for the first time last July, "setting sail" in Grass' 1951 Chevy pickup outfitted with pontoons and waterproofed doors. They were intercepted and returned to Cuba after that trip as well. This time, Basanta brought his family along. "Until the very last minute, I thought that the US authorities were going to help us by giving us visas," Basanta said. With few exceptions, US policy allows Cubans who reach US soil to stay but turns back anyone intercepted at sea. Ninety Cubans intercepted on three suspected smuggling missions in recent days have been returned to Cuba, US authorities said. Prior to Basanta's arrival on Wednesday, police entered his home and searched several auto repair shops in the area. Basanta's friend and fellow rafter on the ill-fated truck trip, Ariel Diego, said they were looking for a red 1951 Ford truck belonging to the family. But the authorities left without seizing the vehicle, which was parked in an adjacent garage, after neighbours poured into the street to complain about the police action. The US Coast Guard sank both of the converted vehicles after removing the refugees, saying they presented a danger to maritime navigation.
