STORYLINE
Hundreds of ultra-orthodox demonstrators scuffled with police in Jerusalem on Saturday during a protest over a decision by Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat to open a municipal car park on the Sabbath.
Ultra-Orthodox Jews oppose the idea because driving is forbidden on the Sabbath.
Protesters, mostly in traditional dress and headgear, were man-handled by police but there were no reports of injuries on either side.
Demonstrators chanted 'shabes, shabes' - Yiddish for the word 'Saturday' - as police pushed them back, trying to clear the road.
Protests opposing the carpark plans have been a regular Saturday occurrence for more than a month, with the city authorities unwilling to back down.
Tensions between authorities and ultra-Orthodox Jews, who make up a third of Jerusalem's residents, have been high since last November, when voters replaced an ultra-Orthodox mayor with a secular candidate.
