The first is developing a biological profile from skeletonize marterial. That includes age, race, sex and stature determinations. The second is looking at the skeleton in terms of trauma- how did this person die? Was he stabbed, was he shot- things of that nature. The third is determining time since death- how long has that individual been dead and the fourth is making a positive identification. My expertise is primarily in determining how long someone's been dead. And we've developed numerous methods, based on this facility, and decompositional studies to determine methods of time since death.
Decomposition can be used um..to answer four of the five "w's" that need to be answered at the crime scene, that is "who, what, where when and why." The only thing decomposition cannot answer is 'why.' Why did this crime occur, or why did this person get killed. Historically...
.
2:05:52 close up of plastic tubes sticking out of the earth.
q- tell us what's going on here.
a- Ok, locating clandestine graves is typically the most difficult thing that we do. Here we see four graves laid out and this study was designed to look at novel ways of identifying where a clandestine grave is. And this research is based on the odor that is liberated during the decompositional process. Ah, in this study we've put a piping system and here we see some piping coming out of the ground. We put piping under the body, we put a body on top of that, then we put another piping system on top of the body, then cover it. And we've also surgically implanted some viewing points. so we can monitor morphologically, or visually, what decomposition is doing in a burial situation. What's interesting about that is that's never been done before.
q- that's where you'll sink a camera thru?
A- Yes. In these ports you'll see a little nipple here that comes off. We can put a collection device called a triple sorbent trap- it's a small stainless steel attachment, that goes here and you can pull an air sample and that air sample can determine what volatile compounds are either below or directly above the body in a burial situation. We also have capture hoods, these large metal devices here, that then are laid over the ground and these things will then collect all the odors that are actually coming up thru the ground all the way from the burial site. uh, in theory we are then identifying exactly what compounds a cadaver locating dog can alert to. That has many ramifications, the most important is being able to better train the cadaver-locating dog. Training has always been an issue and the better trained they are the better they are able to do their job. Another ramification of this research is developing a hand-held instrument that is then able to augment or in some cases supplant the cadavar-locating dog that can then find clandestine graves.
uh it takes a lot of manpower and the cost is very high. if you have a very large field and you are trying to locate a grave.
these (gestures to graves) are relatively fresh and you can see that the ground is somewhat subsided. this typically happens in a relatively recent grave- but as time goes on this fills up and is no longer very visually obvious that a grave is here.
2:08:44
q- how could this help law enforcement officials?
a- the advantage of this type of research is allowing the investigator to quickly find the grave, therefore saving cost and manpower. It can also, the faster you find a grave such as this, the more likely is it that evidence can be preserved. if this grave undiscovered for decades evidence like cigarette butts, shovel markings as they were digging the grave, could become obscured. and the more rapidly that you can find these graves, the more likely you are to have evidence recovered.

2:11:26
Close up of tubes sticking out of earth, leaves. Vass touches port describes what it does.
Metal hood, ect.
.
Metal hood against trees starburst.
.
Close up of grave markers, #39-02. 40-02
.
02:14:39
Nice shots close up of tubes, metal caps, ect. pan to brown leaves.
.
02:15:57
Trees, Vass walking up thru woods
good shot
.
02:16
great starts w/ vass shadow- then on to him:
"One of the more unconventional methods of finding clandestine graves we are testing out here is called 'divining.'
Most people uh..recognize it as 'water-witching' type of divining. In water-witching you are looking for water and you use wood. But when you are looking for clandestine graves you use metal. In this case, coat hangers! We took a coat hanger and we have two of them and you bend them, whoops! at a 90-degree angle and you put them in anything that allows them to rotate freely, you use straws. the concept is very simple and let them rotate freely, as you walk over an area that has a clandestine grave, they in theory should snap together or snap apart. In most cases for me they snap together. So we walk over this area which is suspected to be a grave and they snap together.
(backs up)
02:17:40
We think that the reason this works is because there are alot of salts in the human body (walks) They snap together.
(nice)
Because there are a lot of salts in the human body, as you decompose under the ground there is a battery effect. Generated, under ground. And that battery effect disrupts the electromagnetic field which encompasses the surface of the earth. And that local anomally- the disruption- is picked up by a pseudo antenna and it polarizes them. So you get a charge which either attracts them together or snaps them apart. You can literally feel or even visually something pulling these rods together, I'll do it again. (smiles, backs up)
It's really cool, haha! Ok, you're walking along and they just snap together.
But any type of metal except stainless steel tends to work.
02:19:00
q- have you guys been doing this for a long time or did you just discover it?
a- no actually i think in england they use it quite a bit, looking for water, not sure if looking for graves, divining has been around for centuries.
it's just very interesting, quasi-scientific way of looking, if you have nothing else, because looking for clandestine graves is so difficult, we look at just about any possible avenue to find them. normally what people do is use ground penetrating radar- now because of all the tree roots it makes it very difficult, you have very little options. you have a cadaver dog which may or may not locate the grave and you can probe. probing you take simply a metal rod and look for looser dirt which implies an excavated area which is the area. if you look at a 100-acre field that'll take months and you're going to find a lot of false positives and have to do a lot of excavations. so if you can locate something like that and confirm it with something as simple and inexpensive as divining- so could save a lot of time.

q- is that used out in the field?
a-I use it all the time, people laugh at me, then they go -huh huh and walk away.
chit chat about his field work.
02:20:57
Vass walks us thru divining again. People say oh- it's the way you are walking, moving, see they are not moving, then see how they snap together, it works all the time for me, it's so cool. Sometimes it works over concrete, you are walking along and lo and behold it works!
It cost about what 50-cents, ground penetrating radar costs what 12-thousand. haha!
.
02:22:24
chopper coming in.
.
<pi>Forensics Body Farm </pi>
<pi>Logged : Latraniecesa Johnson </pi>
.
02:22:44-02:23:20 Biello/"Historically most people have used forensic entomology, on a very cold frigid day like this there are no insects so you have to look for an alternative method and some of the methods we have developed have actually looked at tissue from the corpse it self, as the tissue breaks down it eventually goes away and you end up with the scalp the tissue breaks down and drains some where it either drains for instance out here it would drain in to the soil or into clothing if they were in clothing or if you died in a house it would be in the bedding our the carpeting."

02:23:21-02:23:37 "What happens with soft tissue break down you get the production of chemical molecules, and we've identified a number of chemical molecules both for soft tissue decomp as well as skeletonized decomp that will aid in time of death determination.

****02:23:37-02:24:26 " These are so accurate that you can determine how long someone's been dead plus a minus two weeks up to the entire year of the decomposition and the third method of using this research facility is looking at actually specific components of tissue, having to do with the brain, heart, liver, kidney deep muscle tissue what's interesting about that the accuracy of looking at very specific tissue markers, in this case various amino acids and sometimes miro transmitters is that you get down too a plus or minus twelve hours time range of when the person died, up to over a month after they died and that's about the state of the art, that's the cutting edge of time and death research plus a minus twelve hours after a month of death."****

02:24:39-02:25:25 ("There are many ways, few are very accurate If you're talking about very recent deaths less then two days, you can look at the amount of rigamortis the stiffening of the body algamortis which is the cooling of the body to the ambian temperature, you can look at the potassium level in the jelly like substance in within the eye, remember the eyes are one of the first things to go when the insects come into play you can look at the digestive processes of the digestive system, how much food is decomposed since you last ate, people in Europe have looked at the outer ear temperature or the inner central brain temperature again depending on how the individual died that information may or may not be accessible."

02:25:26 If you're talking about things greater then 48 hours, it becomes even more problematic they have to turn towards forensics entomology and things that we've developed here like volatile fatty acid determination which is a break down part of muscle and fat as well as inorganic analysis looking at calcium or focfaids that have deposited where the decompositional event occurred and then finally the amino acid within various organs, and of course that depends on if the organs are present and when the skeletonized or completely skeletonized you usually can't use that method.

02:26:13 (Do you also look to find what you can find from bone?) In fact the inorganic method is used for skeletonized the record for being skeltonized in Tennessee is 12 days you can go from fresh to completely skeletonized in 12 days in the summer time which is phenomenal and again we can determine how long they died for several years after that with a plus or minus in about a month., using the inorganic indicator that leach out of bone like calcium focfaids.

02:26:53 (Do you also test bone to see what's left in the bone)"That's an area of research which is just beginning to develop now, looking at DNA and looking at oils and things that may be on bone, like carnival activity that's an area of research that really hasn't gotten a lot of attention at the moment and mainly looking at products that leached into the soil or into the skeleton resides is an indicator of how long they've been dead ."

02:27:36-02:28:05 "We do DNA work, again the best sample you can get from the skeleton is probably the teeth, in terms of DNA .the decompositional process of the bone is very aggressive and it will do damage to DNA and you cant always get a very good DNA sample so you have to have alternative methods, and so we try to be open minded and look at as many methods as you can because every situation of a crime scene is completely different.

02:28:06-02:29:02 (primarily uses mitochondrial DNA ) There is a research project that were looking at 16S as a way of following the microbial population, which is very interesting like insects the microbes come in ways of successions, first come the blow fly', then come the carnivorous beetles and they come in waves depending on which food source is left on the corpse. Microbes do the same thing , and that's another poroject going on looking at the population of microbes out here and how can they be used to time death.

02:29:12 Cu of bone fragment on ground.
****02:29:38 pan shot of a decomposing body.
****02:29:41 CU of head on the ground
****02:29:58 WS of corpse on ground pans across the body **** GREAT SHOT .MIGHT NE TOO MUCH FOR VIEWERS????
02:30:51 MS of corpse covered on the ground pans the corpse.
02:31:19 WS of body farm/pans all the bodies
02:31:37 / Ms of almost done decomposed corpse/skeletal fragments
****02:31:50 -02:32:44/(Leans next to corpse while explaining) "As soon as you die you begin the process of liquefying the soft tissue liquefies this is done by insects as well as by bacteria as well as enzymes that are found naturally in the cells of the body, as you liquefy in then of course all the protein and all your fats and carbohydrates that make up the soft tissue of your body all break down and they eventually pour off the body and in this case (Shows with his hands the process) " Were talking about this type of matrix, here its socked into the ground, so if you wanted to do times of death estimates, this is where you would collect the sample, not on the body , because this is where all the break down products of the soft tissue are and the method that we've developed looks at the breakdown products the concentration and the amounts determines how long this person has been dead.
02:32:45-02:33:04/ pretty much skeletonized, but we can still determine how long this person has been dead, up to about plus minus a week, based on just looking at this material right here.
****02:33:19-02:34:08 You can not exactly tell how long someone has been dead there is no method available again that's why we choose to look at intercellular indicators because the cells, that's where the first change would occur inside each cell and we are progressing in that direction with that tissue method that we've developed with amino acids, how protein breaks down with amino acids its almost instantaneous after death, and the amount of amino acids that are present in each cell gives you that very accurate time since death estimate, but its still not exact We have not found a way yet to be absolutely exact in how long someone has been dead.
02:34:34 "Currently there is no way to exactly determine the length of time that someone's been dead because there will always be some error associated with it , because of environmental factors right now we are trying to optimize the ability to do that by looking into intercellular, looking with the cell, because that's where the first change will occur and the closest we have right now is looking at the tissue model with amino acid concentrations because it proteins break down into the building blocks of amino acids that amounts of amino acids present in the ration between is the most accurate method doing time since death.
02:35:27 There are methods of looking at the amount of blood settling and how it settles in the body and where it settles normally that is not used very frequently, when you get to corpse they will always ask you how do you know the body has not been moved. Since it died and you can never answer that and so looking at how blood settles and how much it settles is a poor way of doing time since death.
****02:36:10 ( How do you deal with issues with bodies under water ?) "That's probably the most difficult because all the things that you look for that leach into the environment like this, are washed away by the water so you have to actually look at the remaining tissue in the body or on the body, that's a process just beginning now, because again we have to take probes and look intercellular, if the organs remain its easy we can use the tissue analysis or if you're just a skeleton in the lake or river bed its extraordinarily difficult to do an accurate time since death weathering on the bone how much the bone has cracked or exfoliated. ****
*****02:37:10 That is the goal, the goal for me is to push technology to the front, so that law enforcement have the technology available to solve crime real time at the crime scene and not four months later in some laboratory, my goal is to develop instantiation techniques that law enforcement can use right there at the crime scene to solve the crime scene .***
******02:37:39 ( Do you see this happening in the future?) "We already have remote cameras that can be set up at crime scenes and you can have the investigator interrogating the whole crime scene at his office. There is a laser on the camera that can measure blood splatter and looking into trajectories completely remotely. and I really think that's where forensic science is going to head in the future.****
02:38:29 CU of box on truck/ pans to body on stretcher
02:38:44 CU of body on stretcher (pans up and down )
02:39:09 MS of woman digging dirt
****02:39:27 CU of dirt and shovel
02:39:45 MS of woman digging with a different instrument
02:40:08 A shot of her digging from a different point of view
****02:40:38 A side view shot of woman digging with nice sun set / VS of digging ?
****02:42:15 Side view shot of digging
02:42:38 CU of woman digging
02:43:39 VS of digging
02:45:60 Ms of women digging with a pile of dirt ready for burial
****02:46:17 MS of women taking the body out on a stretcher (ladies placing gloves on )
<pi>**********************Use all this material with Caution, GRAPHIC!************</pi>
03:46:48 Pan shot of the farms body remains
*****02:47:14 CU of esophagus skeletal remains
02:47:42 CU of muscle matter on ground pans back up to the esophagus
02:48:00 MS of skeletal particles on ground pans back up to corpse pans down to moisture found on ground.
02:48:24 CU of foot in a decomposing stage
****02:48:52 CU of the hand pans up to legs
02:49:07 WS of feet looking partially decomposed .pans up to the arm
02:49:23 CU of arm, cam pas to the legs and feet
02:49:36 Cu of head in skeletal and half tissue state
02:50:15 MS of corpses scattered throughout the ground .pan shot of bodies
****02:50:40 CU of head in a half tissue skeletal state (pan shot that goes to a cu of head
****02:51:04 Side view shot of bodies lined in farm ( pan shot to the corpses )
02:51:36 cu of corpse in body bag ( pan shot of corpse in body bag )
02:52:21 CU of body decomposed
02:52:23/ WS of body decomposed
****02:52:41 Zoom in shot of feet in a better state pans to the head.
