WHY THE 4TH OF JULY VNR (07/03/1996)
THE RESULTS OF A NATIONWIDE TELEPHONE POLL SHOW THAT THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS COULD USE A REFRESHER COURSE IN THE BASICS OF HOW OUR NATIONA BEGAN. THE COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG FOUNDATION COMMISSIONED A TELEPHONE SURVEY OF OVER 1,000 ADULTS ACROSS AMERICA. OVER 80% OF SURVEY RESPONDENTS KNEW THERE WERE 13 COLONIES AS THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR BEGAN, AND THAT THE COLONISTS STAGED THE BOSTON TEA PARTY AS A TAX PROTEST. HOWEVER, OTHER QUESTIONS WERE MORE OF A CHALLENGE. FOR EXAMPLE, MORE THAN SIX OUT OF TEN RESPONDENTS DID NOT KNOW THAT THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR BEGAN IN 1775; THE MAJORITY OF PARTICIPANTS WERE UNABLE TO NAME VIRGINIA AS THE STATE IN WHICH THE FINAL BATTLE OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR WAS FOUGHT; AND 60% OF RESPONDENTS DIDN'T KNOW THAT THOMAS PAYNE WROTE "COMMON SENSE", THE POLITICAL MANIFESTO THAT HELPED THE COLONISTS' FERVOR FOR REVOLUTION.
