POWELL SPEECH
00:00:00:00 [Retired General Colin Powell delivers his speech at the Republican Natl Convention]--MS Colin Powell walks onto stage towards podium and waves to crowd/ VS Powell waves to crowd/ SOT COLIN POWELL: Thank you very much. Thank you. My fellow Americans. My fellow Republicans. (applause) I come before you this evening as a retired soldier, a fellow citizen who has lived the American dream to the fullest, as someone who believes in that dream and wants that dream to become reality for every American. My parents came to this country as immigrants over 70 years ago. Here tonight, over seven decades after they landed on these shores, their son has been given the privilege of addressing the Republican party, assembled in convention to present to the American people, our vision of how that dream could be passed on for future generations. (applause) Our vision, first and foremost, rests on values. Values, because values are the conscience of a society. Values which must be lived and not just preached. Children learn values by watching their parents in their homes. Values which are then reinforced in their churches and in their places of worship, in the schools and the communities in which they live. (applause) And values fuel families, families that are bound together by love and commitment. Families that have the strength to withstand the assaults of contemporary life to resist the images of violence and vulgarity that flood in to our lives everyday. Families that come together as communities (pause) to defeat the scourge of drugs and crime and incivility that threatens us. That's why we Republicans believe that the family fueled by values must be restored to the central place in American life, if we are to keep the dream alive! (applause) Families can not thrive and pass on these beliefs (pause) if parents can not bring home a decent living wage from a hard day's work. A nation as great and diverse as America deserves leadership that opens its arms not only to those who have already reaped the rewards of the American dream but to those who strive and struggle each day against daunting odds to make that dream come true. (applause) The Republican Party must always be the party of inclusion. (applause) The Hispanic immigrant who became a citizen yesterday must be as precious to us as a Mayflower descendent. (applause) The descendent of a slave or of a struggling minor Appalachia must be as welcomed and must find as much appeal in our party as in any other party or any other American might. (applause) It is our diversity that has made us strong. Yet our diversity has sadly throughout our history also been the source of discrimination. Discrimination that we as guardians of the American dream must rip out branch and root. (applause) It is our party, the party of Lincoln, that must always stand for equal rights and fair opportunity for all. (applause) And where discrimination still exists, or where the scars of past discrimination still contaminate and disfigure the present, we must not close our eyes to it, declare there is a level playing field and hope that it will go away by itself. It did not in the past. It will not in the future. Let the party of Lincoln be in the forefront leading the crusade, not only to cut off and kill discrimination but to open every avenue of educational and economic opportunity to those who are still denied access because of their race, ethnic background or gender. (applause) I have been asked many times why I became a Republican. I became a Republican because, like you, I believe our party best represents the principles of freedom, opportunity and limited government upon which our nation was founded. (applause) I became a Republican because I believe the policies of our party will lead to greater economic growth which is the only real solution to the problems of poverty that keep too many Americans from sharing in the wealth of this nation. (applause) I became a Republican because I believe, like you, that the federal government has become too large and too intrusive in our lives. (applause) We can no longer afford solutions to our problems that result in more entitlements, higher taxes to pay for them, more bureaucracy to run them and fewer results to show for it. (applause) I became a Republican because I believe America must remain the leader of the free world. Republican leadership [and] a Republican president will bring greater conviction and coherence to our foreign policy and will guarantee that our armed forces remain the strongest and most capable on earth. (applause) I became a Republican because I want to help fill the big tent that our party has raised to attract all Americans. (applause) You all know that I believe in a woman's right to choose and that I strongly support affirmative action. (applause) And I was invited here by my party to share my views with you because we're a big enough party and big enough people to disagree on individual issues and still work together for a common goal, restoring the American dream! (applause) Thank you. I am a Republican because I believe in that dream. I believe that we are the ones to keep it alive. Later this week, we will nominate our leader. He is a man of proven courage. He showed his courage on the battlefield. He showed even greater courage in overcoming the wounds of war. I know this man. (cutaway of Elizabeth Dole) In an era of too much salesmanship and too much smooth talking, Bob Dole is a plain spoken man. (applause) (cutaway of Elizabeth Dole) He is a man of strength, maturity and integrity. He is a man who can bring trust back to government and bring Americans together again. He is a fighter possessed of endless energy, drive and commitment. Bob Dole is a candidate most qualified by virtue of his beliefs, his character [and] competence to be the next President of the United States of America! (applause) These are the things that remain constant. These are the things that unite us. There are other eternal truths, other eternal constants in our lives. Our constant devotion to the principles of freedom, democracy and the free enterprise system. Our constant belief in the promise of this country, a country where the best is always yet to come. (applause) A country that exists by the grace of a divine providence. A divine providence that gave us this land, told us to be good stewards of it and to be good stewards of each other. A land that God has truly, truly blessed and we are proud to call America! Thank you!/ VS delegates applaud and cheer for Powell, Powell waves to crowd. Powell, Powell waves to crowd. TVU 1 BERNIE SANDERS CHARLESTON WV ABC UNI 050516 C16 FEED IS INCOMPLETE [refeed starts at 16:58:30] HIGHLIGHTS Could you do me a favor and log the very top of his remarks -not the thank yous but the top about the race and winning west virginia And also the part about encouraging people to vote All within the first 2-3 mins POVERTY 16:59:06 Thank you so much for being here and we apologize for being late. We were down in McDowell County. And as Sabrina just mentioned, we had a town meeting there and it was an extraordinary meeting. We had a whole lot of very brave people talking and standing up and tell us what poverty is about in West Virginia and McDowell County. And you all know we have poverty all over America. And it's about time that we started in the wealthiest nation in the world to talk about poverty. WEST VIRGINIA VOTE 17:00:19 What this campaign is about and why we are doing so well and why we have now won 18 state primaries. And with your help on Tuesday, West Virginia will be 19. Why we are doing so well is because we're doing something very radical in contemporary American politics, we're telling the truth. Believe me the truth is not always pleasant. But it is important that we deal with reality and not push the truth underneath the carpet because if you do that, we're never going to go forward. 17:01:20 Let me just start off on a truth that Sabrina was just talking about, I want you all to appreciate this, historically for a very long time in the united states and all over the world, people have been living longer hours, longer lives, people have been living longer lives. Their life expectancy is going up. ABOUT LIFE EXPECTANCY GAP 17:01:43 And yet was Sabrina was saying is that in McDowell county and in many parts of America now, we are actually seeing a decrease in life expectancy. You all know that? A decrease. And the reason for that is that millions of americans now are living in despair, they have no work or the income they are living with is so low that they are turning to drugs, they are turning to alcohol and the suicide rate in this country is going up. And that is a question, why? What goes on? How does it happen that in the wealthiest country, in America, we have a life expectancy gap between McDowell county and Fairfax county Virginia of 18 years. 18 years, for men. Alright. 18 years. The gap is lower, I think it's 13 for women, but 18 years for men. 17:03:00 So if you are born into a wealthy community, if you do not have the stress of living with poverty, if you got the healthcare that you need, if you are in a wealthy community you can live 18 years longer than if you are in a poor community like that in McDowell county. In other words poverty is a death sentence. TAKING ON REPUBLICAN GOVERNORS 17:07:37 That is why we will take on Republican governors who are working overtime trying to suppress the vote. We live in a country which has one of the lowest voting turnout rates of any major country on earth. We don't want to make it harder for people to get involved in the democratic process, we want to make it easier. PROTECTING FOSSIL FUEL WORKERS 17:45:15 I understand that as we transform the energy system of this country and of the world that there are workers in the fossil fuel industry who will be hurt. Our job is to make certain that we protect those workers we do not leave them behind. That is why I have introduced legislation which puts 41 billion dollars into helping those workers and those communities get their feet back on the ground. --- Sanders drove over 320 miles today across West Virginia to three events. After the poverty forum in the morning, his last two events were standard rallies. He consistently brought up the issue of poverty in the state and across the country and made a point of talking about the need to protect coal workers (/ former coal workers) at each stop. Interestingly, during the first rally he did not mention Clinton at all, but during the second rally he framed a good chunk of his remarks around his differences with her and named her several times talking still about her Wall Street speeches and Iraq War vote. Sanders is still drawing big crowds. Just under 3200 people came to hear him speak for that final event in Morgantown, West Virginia - population 30,000. Two worlds. For movie director, DEV BENEGAL this is India; a duality of tradition and modernity of extreme wealth and extreme poverty. But the grand irony is whether Indians can ever resolve the conflicts, contradictions and dilemmas of being young and Indian? This is what drives the director's work and what informs his latest movie Split Wide Open, which, on one level, takes a look at what happens when the people of the nation that gave us the Kama Sutra put their contemporary victorian repression behind them to talk about their secret sexual lives on a TV exploitation show. On another level the movie looks at exploitation - in this instance the exploitation of what should be a free commodity - water. On the hot streets of Bombay, KP (RAHUL BOSE), a hustler with a cell phone and a scooter unlocks taps and sells water to the poor and Evian to the rich, while Didi, his adopted 10-year-old sister stalks the traffic lights selling flowers to earn her next meal. Nan, an expatriate from London, hosts an exploitation TV show where people come in and talk about their secret sexual lives. The worlds of Nan and KP collide when KP tries to broker an Evian deal on the side. He incurs the wrath of the water mafia who brutally punish him. When he returns home he finds Didi missing. Searching for Didi on the mean streets of Bombay, KP learns that lost innocence can't be regained while Nan discovers that the TV is helpless against the tides and temptations of the city. With KP's help, Nan slowly exposes the city's sordid underbelly. Then a guest on the TV show offers a clue to Didi's whereabouts. What is revealed to KP takes him into an entirely different world from his own and that of Nan's show, which has become extremely popular, and challenges all notion's of morality in questions of sex and poverty.   The story was developed by Dev Benegal and UPAMANYO CHATTERJEE and the screenplay was written by a former commissioning editor at Channel 4 in London, FARRUKH DHONDY. Musician NITIN SAWHNEY wrote the music. Starring alongside Rahul Bose are LAILA ROUASS (Nandita) SHIVAJI SATHAM (Shiv) AYESHA DHARKER (Leela) KIRAN NAGARKAR (Bono) FARIDA HAIDER MULLA (Didi). Rahul Bose divides his time between India and Britain where he is currently based. He is about to star in a West End theater production. Born in Delhi, Dev Benegal grew up on a diet of American and British films. He made his frist feature, ENGLISH, AUGUST in 1994. Considered a landmark in contemporary indian cinema, the film is an irreverent study of bureaucracy. It picked up several festival awards. Let me thank Alejandro Corona Ortega. Let me thank Senator Gary Winfield. Let me thank Michaela McDonald. And let me thank one of the great performers of our time, Michael Site. [ cheers and applause ] But mostly, let me thank all of you for coming out this evening. Let me thank you for having the courage and the vision to be part of a political revolution. [ cheers and applause ] A revolution that will not just elect a new president, but transform the United States of America. 19:14:04 A movement that will create a government that represents all of us, not just the 1%. [ cheers and applause ] I'm going to in a moment talk about the differences that exist between Secretary Clinton and myself. [ boos ] The differences that exist between Donald Trump and myself. [ boos ] But this campaign is really about much more than the differences that exist between myself and my opponents. What this campaign is really about is for all of us together, to take on the status quo. [ cheers and applause ] And to understand that in the richest country in the history of the world, we can be much, much more than we are today. [ cheers and applause ] 19:15:24 The reason that this campaign has already won caucuses and primaries in 16 states throughout the country -- [ cheers and applause ] the reason that we have closed the gap between Secretary Clinton and myself, which when we began was 60 points. Today we are in some polls a few points ahead. [ cheers and applause ] The reason that we are defeating Donald Trump in national and state polls by 15 to 20 points - [ cheers and applause ] The reason is that we are doing something very unusual in contemporary American politics. We are telling the truth. METAPHOR - YALE VS. POVERTY 19:22:08 Now right now, here in the great city of New Haven -- [ cheers and applause ] -- we see almost a metaphor for what's happening throughout this country. Right here in this great city, we have one of the outstanding institutions of higher education all over the world. That's what Yale University is. [ cheers and applause ] And we should be proud of this great university. But, a few miles away from here in this same city, we have children who are getting totally inadequate education. [ cheers and applause ] 19:23:01 Right here, one of the great universities in the world, and a few blocks away from here, kids who in a million years would never dream that they could even get a college education. Right here, we have a university that has an endowment of $24 billion. But all over this city and this state, we have children who are living in desperate poverty. [ cheers and applause ] In this city alone, 36% of the children are living in poverty. [ boos ] I was in Baltimore the other day. Tens of thousands of people addicted to heroin. 40, 50% unemployment rates in minority communities.

Clip Video FANS AND MUSICIANS GATHER TO SAY GOODBYE TO THE 'KING OF BOOGIE' Singer Bonnie Raitt led hundreds of friends and fans in a rowdy, fond send off for superstar blues guitarist JOHN LEE HOOKER on Thursday. The 83 year old legend died of natural causes at his home in Los Altos, California, on June 21. Hundreds of people including Hooker's extended family, gathered at an Oakland auditorium to pay tribute to the star, and remember his life and career as one of the last giants of American blues. Musicians including harmonica player Charlie Musselwhite and 72 year old blues veteran Eddie Kirkland joined the mourners, alongside Raitt who shared a 1990 Grammy Award with Hooker, for their duet 'I'm in the Mood'. The crowd joined in foot-stomping gospel songs and heartfelt tributes to the blues hero known as 'The King of Boogie'. A stage was covered with flowers and pictures of the star, while two special floral arrangements were placed either side of his casket - one in the shape of a guitar, the other, an empty chair. John Lee Hooker is credited with helping to turn the blues of the Mississippi Delta into one of the 20th Century's most influential musical styles. Hooker was born into the poverty of Clarksdale, Mississippi. one of 11 children of a Baptist minister and sharecropper who discouraged his son's musical bent. Many references say he was born in 1917, but he told the San Jose Mercury News he was really born in 1920. He said he had given the earlier date when he lied about his age to get into the Army when he was 16. His stepfather taught him to play guitar, a skill he coupled with a rich sonorous voice and brooding rhythm to inspire countless musicians and electrify audiences His growling 12 bar expression of the heartaches of modern life was still winning praise in his 80s, with a lifetime of hits including 'Boogie Chillen' (recorded in 1948), 'Boom Boom' and 'One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer'. Hooker's popularity grew steadily as he rode the wave of rock in the '50s into the folk boom of the '60s. He hit it big again in 1990 with his album "The Healer," featuring duets with Santana, Raitt and Robert Cray. It sold 1.5 million copies. The bluesman himself once estimated he had recorded more than 100 albums. In 1991, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Last year, at the Grammys, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award. Hooker outlived most of his Blues contemporaries, including Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, Lightnin' Hopkins and Muddy Waters, who like him, learned their style in the poor black communities of the rural south of America. He is survived by eight children, 19 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
