Edoardo Agnelli, the son of Fiat magnate Giovanni Agnelli, was found dead on Wednesday under a highway bridge.
He was 46 years old.
The cause of death was not given but suicide was suspected.
Fiat officials said the body was found alongside a stream under the Turin-Savona highway.
Company spokesman Franco Sodano said Agnelli's empty Fiat Croma was parked on the bridge above.
His father Giovanni Agnelli joined police officials at the scene.
Edoardo Agnelli had shown little interest in the Turin-based automobile empire founded by his great grandfather 101 years ago and never held any position in it.
He studied religion at Princeton University and spent some time in India.
A rare mention in the news came after his arrest for heroin possession in Kenya in 10 years ago.
His father now holds the title of honorary chairman of Fiat, while the family has turned to outsiders to run the company.
Edoardo's death is the latest tragedy to strike Italy's most prominent family.
His father's nephew, and heir apparent to Fiat, died three years ago of cancer.
Giovanni Alberto Agnelli was 33 years old at the time, and was being groomed for the job of running Fiat.
