Carlos Santana at Altamont Free Concert, near Tracy, CA, US
Audience and Carlos Santana during The Altamont Speedway Free Festival, at Altamont Speedway near Tracy, CA, US, 1969. The Altamont Speedway Free Festival is an American counterculture rock concert held on Saturday, December 6, 1969 at the Altamont Speedway outside Tracy, California. About 300,000 people attended the concert, with some predicting it could become "Woodstock West." The event is remembered for considerable violence, including the stabbing death of Meredith Hunter and three accidental deaths: two caused by a hit-and-run car accident, and one by LSD-induced drowning in an irrigation canal. Scores were injured, numerous cars were stolen and then abandoned, and there was extensive property damage. The concert featured (in order of appearance): Santana, Jefferson Airplane, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, with the Rolling Stones taking the stage as the final act.

And they aren't looking back. In fact, the title of their new album is actually called LOOKING FORWARD. The accompanying 34 city tour , dubbed CSNY2K, Kicks off on January 24 in Detroit. The legendary CSN&Y deny it is a reunion. The four balding rockers maintain they are friends and have continually played music together even when they were famously bickering. LOOKING FORWARD, their first album since American DREAM in 1988, emerged from a jamming session in 1998 when NEIL YOUNG dropped in on DAVID CROSBY, STEPHEN STILLS AND GRAHAM NASH , shared some of his songs, and had so much fun he didn't leave for several days. Since the seventies CROSBY, STILLS and YOUNG have all had successful solo careers. NASH, meanwhile, spent much of the 1980s recovering from horrific drug problems.
