Thousands gather in Los Angeles to protest US immigration policies
LOS ANGELES, US - FEB. 03, 2025: Thousands of protesters gathered in Los Angeles on Sunday to denounce the Trump administration’s measures to combat irregular migration, including deportation operations and stricter border policies. The demonstration, held at the historic Mexican marketplace, saw participants march onto the 101 Freeway, temporarily halting traffic.Protesters chanted slogans and carried signs with messages against President Donald Trump. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) warned residents of road closures, saying on social media that the protest was unauthorized.Los Angeles, where one in three residents is an immigrant, is home to approximately 3.6 million migrants, 79% of whom are from Mexico and Central America. The protest comes amid growing tensions over Trump’s recently announced immigration policies. On Jan. 20, Trump announced the removal of the CBP One app which allowed migrants to apply for legal entry into the US.Additionally, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was granted authority on Jan. 22 to arrest irregular migrants in or near sensitive locations like churches, hospitals and schools.A recent legislative victory for Trump, the Laken Riley Act, allows border agents to detain migrants involved in crimes without a court order.Trump has also ordered the preparation of a facility at Guantanamo Bay to hold up to 30,000 migrants.(Footage by Jon Putman/Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)

Wide pan of audience 9. SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) Fidel Castro, President of Cuba "For Cuba, it's absolutely clear that the so-called Free Trade Area of the Americas in the conditions, timetables, strategies, objectives and procedures imposed by the United States leads inexorably to the annexation of Latin America by the United States" 10. Wide shot of audience 11. Soldiers marching with flags 12. Wide shot of soldiers marching down steps STORYLINE: Cuban President Fidel Castro denounced the U-S embargo and urged workers to protest international criticism of Cuba's human rights record at a rally in Havana where thousands of Cubans gathered for May Day labour celebrations. Castro also invited Cubans to march past the U-S government's mission in Havana in an act of defiance. The protest, part of May Day labor celebrations worldwide, also came as Cuba approaches the first anniversary of Elian Gonzalez's return from the United States after a bitter custody battle which came to echo the wider political conflicts characterising the two countries longtime antagonistic relationship. Marchers on Tuesday were also there to protest the recent U-N condemnation of Cuba for its rights record. The Czech Republic's proposal to condemn Cuba, strongly supported by the United States, was approved by the U-N Human Rights Commission in Geneva on April 18. 10 nations abstained. Castro also made a point of denouncing the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas. He claims that the hemispheric trading bloc represents U-S efforts to impose its will on Latin America.

It makes absolutely no sense. We're really tired of it in the United States and we're going to be pushing this Congress to say 'enough is enough'. Wide interior of Ebenezer Church at MLK Centre 10. Close-up Sheehan seated in pew 11. Wide of congregation giving Sheehan standing ovation STORYLINE: Peace activists in Cuba to protest the American military prison in Guantanamo on Sunday expressed hope that the new Democratic congressional leadership will help ease long-standing US trade and travel sanctions against the communist-run island. "I think that it's about time we end the embargo and open up relations with Cuba," said Cindy Sheehan, who became an anti-war protester known as the "peace mom" after her 24-year-old son Casey was killed in Iraq in April 2004. "It only hurts the population and it doesn't hurt the people in either country that are in power," she added. US restrictions bar most Americans from spending money in Cuba, effectively preventing them from travelling here legally. The restrictions also bar virtually all trade between the countries, except for some US sales of food and medicine to the island. Sheehan has drawn international attention by camping outside US President George W Bush's ranch to protest the war and has been arrested numerous times for trespassing during demonstrations. She arrived in Havana on Saturday with other peace activists including Medea Benjamin, who organised the trip through the California activist groups Global Exchange and Codepink. "The only place in the world right now where we have problems going is Cuba. We're really tired of it in the United States and we're going to be pushing this Congress to say 'enough is enough'," Benjamin said. She added that the sanctions had made the group's trip here very difficult. Benjamin said she and others in the group of 12 believe they are exempt from the US restrictions because they are travelling as professional human rights activists who will attend a day-long international conference in the Cuban city of Guantanamo on Wednesday. They plan to hold a protest outside the main gate of the US Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay on Thursday morning to call for the closure of the military prison there. The other activists include a former US Army colonel, a constitutional law expert, the mother of a British citizen held at the military prison and a former prisoner who was held there. At the prison the US military is still holding about 395 men on suspicion of links to al-Qaida or the Taliban, including about 85 who have been cleared to be released or transferred to other countries. The military says it wants to charge 60 to 80 detainees and bring them to trial. The protest outside the Guantanamo base will coincide with demonstrations around the world calling on the United States to shut the remote prison on the fifth anniversary the first prisoners arrived there.
