A twister ripped through northern Georgia this morning leaving a 10-mile path of destruction. Five counties have been declared disaster areas. Eleven people were killed, at least 80-injured, mostly from being hit by flying debris. When the tornado moved on, 12-thousand people were left without power.

Uprooted tree sticking out of ground STORYLINE: A series of deadly tornadoes wreaked havoc across the US Midwest on Sunday, killing an estimated 28 people in three states, and injuring dozens. The tornadoes left a swathe of destruction a quarter-mile (400 metres) wide in some places. Seven counties in Kansas, where eight people died, have been declared disaster areas. Officials in Missouri said so far 12 people were reported killed, and the process was also under way to declare disaster areas in the state. Missouri officials told the National Guard to be ready to go to storm-damaged areas including the cities of Liberty and Marionville in Missouri. One of the hardest hit areas appeared to be Pierce City, Missouri, where about nine people were missing and feared dead inside a destroyed National Guard Armoury where they had taken shelter. Searchers accompanied by dogs were digging through the armoury debris in hopes of finding the missing victims alive, but the brick-and-wood structure was unstable and the process was going slowly. Not a home or business in the town of nearly 1,400 residents was untouched by the tornado. Trees were twisted, power lines were downed, and brick, glass and other debris made it impossible to walk the city streets. At Kansas City International airport, officials stopped all flights and evacuated terminals. Passengers were ushered into underground tunnels leading to parking garages until the storms passed. The tornadoes were part of a large storm system that hit the Midwest, spawning twisters in South Dakota and Nebraska as well.

At Wright Patterson AFB, the commanding general is checking the storm on radar. At WHIO, weatherman watches his radar, and goes live on t.v. to broadcast a tornado warning. A weather radar shows the storm. Centerville Police Station alerts all police. Miami Valley Disaster services asks if a funnel has been sighted. A tornado is in the distance. An engineer on a train. Wide shot of destruction STORYLINE: A series of tornadoes swept across the US state of Iowa on Saturday leaving one person dead and two others hospitalised. The tornadoes ripped up farms, destroyed homes in several towns and sent college football fans running from a stadium for shelter. In Stratford, search teams found the body of 82 year old Lucille Runyan, 82. Her daughter-in-law said Runyan's son had been with the team that discovered her. Another woman was pulled alive from the rubble as authorities reported two dozen homes in the town were destroyed. In Woodward, 30 miles (48 kilometres) to the south, 20 to 40 homes were severely damaged. One resident described how he and his family ran to the basement of their home when they saw the tornadoes approaching. National Weather Service meteorologist Craig Cogil said it appeared that at least three tornadoes touched down Saturday afternoon. In Ames, football fans gathering for the Iowa State-Colorado game were cleared from the stands and told to take shelter in the nearby basketball arena as the tornado sirens sounded. Tornadoes are rare this late in the year. There have been 23 November tornadoes in Iowa since 1950, all but six of them recorded in the years 1975 and 1988, according to Weather Service records.
