STORYLINE
Turkish riot police on Sunday used truncheons and tear gas to disperse a group of leftist demonstrators who refused to disperse during an unauthorised demonstration in Istanbul to mark the upcoming World Women''s Day.
Police called on the group of about 300 demonstrators to disperse and many of them left peacefully after chanting anti-government slogans.
A group of about 100, however, refused to leave, prompting police to spray tear gas and charge on the group with truncheons.
There were no immediate reports of any injuries.
Earlier in the day, in another part of downtown Istanbul, police detained 48 people who were on their way to take part in the demonstration.
A few thousand demonstrators, mostly women, had taken part in an authorised demonstration in Istanbul on Saturday to draw attention to women''s rights ahead of World Women''s Day on March 8.
Police did not intervene.
