Diatom. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a centric ( radial symmetry ) diatom (paralia). Diatoms are planktonic unicellular algae. They have a mineralised cell wall (frustule) divided into two halves. Diatoms are considered one of the most diverse and ecologically important phytoplanktonic. Marine diatoms rose to prominence about 100 million years ago and today generate most of the organic matter that serves as food for life in the sea. They exist in a dilute world where compounds essential for growth are recycled and shared, and they greatly influence global climate, atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration and marine ecosystem function.

Discarded fabric, buttons, trimming and beads that normally end up in a landfill will be reborn, not as materials for designer clothing... but tools of creative expression of hundreds of New York City school children... a New York fashion designer has launched the 1999 season of Bid For Kids as he becomes a teacher for a fourth grade class. In the coming weeks... Bid For Kids will bring designers and materials into 12 schools throughout Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx and Queens to work directly with children on an arts education program.
